I think it would be quite good to differentiate machine guns in game on 2 types:
1. Light machine guns, RPK-74, M249 SAW, HK 23E - for infantry support.
2. Heavy barrel machineguns М240, PKM, MG-42 - for shooting on light-armored targets, and shelters. to the purposes only from a prone position and deployed bipod mode.
As we know M 249 is almost useless at shooting on cars and helicopters, it's only anti-ifantry weapon. It would be great to have something more seriously and powered in an arsenal.
It is a little about machineguns...

Thanks that have corrected me, quite right!
Certainly I meant MG-3 it very similar with MG 42 aka "power-saw bench".

Portable heavy machine guns are a resuggestion im afraid. Also the MG-3 would be in the same category as the M249 considering that it is carried and operated by a single soldier.
True heavy machine guns are generally tripod mounted and have a crew of at least 2 which is impossible to implement on the BF2 engine.

Realy? MG-3 caliber is 7,62. M-249 (Squad Automatic Weapon) is 5,56 MG-3 not the same class machinegun it's mounted on famous tripod, or bipod, shooting from hands will be something like spray and pray type.jigsaw-uk wrote:Portable heavy machine guns are a resuggestion im afraid. I don't suggesting a portable M2 Browing machinegun, or PKT or DSHK.

Special to you: General purpose machine gun

AFAIK the German faction are gonna use a MG3 on vehicles and have it as a pick-up kit.

I would have thought the German Faction would have used the MG-4

Re: It is a little about machineguns...
How exactly would they differ? Their uses are exactly the same, hence why I placed them in the same category. The LMGs will only be useful from a deployed mode.ZAk wrote:It will be great to use 2 types of MG, imho...??:
Also yes the MG-3 is used in both bipod and tripod mounted versions, however it would not be practical to have it as a portable tripod version for the reasons I stated, meaning that as a bipod mounted light machine gun it would be in the same class as an M249. Also the RPK-74 is a different caliber to the M249 but you placed those in the same class. Most likely it may be used as the vehicle MG rather than as a pickup, as no other faction has an equivalent general purpose machine gun and afaik there are no plans to introduce them. As you say, the HK G36 LMG is far more suitable in terms of balance.
My main point though, was that this is a resuggestion.
And if you think the M249 is rubbish at shooting down helicopters you are using it wrong.

As someone did actually mention, the concept of having separate Automatic riflemen and Machine gunner classes is a re suggestion and the rules state that it should be closed.
