Chopper Flying: Game v. Reality
Anyone ever noticed that to avoid SAMs, you fly low in PR?
It just dawned on me, the same thing is done in real life.

I have flown low for awhile, and flare on attack runs.
I just put 2 and 2 together pretty much.

Actually, when i fly low on muttra with the cobra i get shot down, its the cold ******** that hover extremely far away and high that racks up kills with the hellfire and cannons.

muttrah is probably the best map to fly low on (thou the hardest), other than Qinling (which is very easy to fly though the valleys).
If you fly low on muttrah, you have loads and loads of buildings etc to cover you.

Not for the cobra, the cobra should stay far away behind the hills.[R-DEV]Rhino wrote:muttrah is probably the best map to fly low on (thou the hardest)

Transport choppers do well to fly low on Muttrah though.

If you fly high on Muttrah or most other maps and stay stationary, the most deadly thing to you is either HAT kits or tanks/apcs. Its always fun to shoot down a heli with an anti tank rocket

Yeah, flying high on muttrah is just asking for it.

Re: Chopper Flying: Game v. Reality
People don't realize that flying low is the best way (maybe not on such a open map like kashan). Unfortunately, it's not as effective as it could be since the groundtroops almost NEVER gives any kind of support (as simple as letting the pilots know theres targets at xx coords) to the chopper.
There's always some people whining off about "keep it steady so I can aim *sob*"... If someone has a problem aiming while flying he/she should consider going back to training.... Simple as pie

Re: Chopper Flying: Game v. Reality
Flying low on Muttrah is definitly the best tactic for me and my gunners.
When you fly low we're talking about flying through the streets, rarely going above roofs, also you have to constantly move, if you stay and hover in the streets you'll be shot down pretty quickly.
Flying low gives many advantages, it's a lot easier to provide coverage and support for squads, AA will not expect you and will have a very hard time finding a good firing position when you're so mobile, escape routes will be a lot more safe because when you fly high, the AA will still have a clear view on you when you're escaping, when you're flying low there will just about always be a building to break the lock. The chopper will have a better reaction time when moving into the combat zone since the pilot won't have to perfectly stabilize before the gunner is able to provide decently accurate fire, instead the chopper can move at quite a good speed and you'll gunner will be able to hit right on target.

Re: Chopper Flying: Game v. Reality
There is no best tactic even on mutrah,it all depends on situation.IF you are provided with proper intel the best thing is diving fast on a marked position with flares then getting out.
If noone is giving you any kind of intel(most of the time),i think, best thing to do is to stay high ,behind your attackable flag, without the AA interference, you can defend it relatively easy, with smooth movement you can avoid HAt and APCs.
Flying low is an option, not best thing to do...
But if you are TS chopper, yes, flying as low as possible is the best thing.

Sorry, but the main threat in Muttrah is not flying around the city, its going anywhere over the water. And altitude doesn't help you there.

Re: Chopper Flying: Game v. Reality
Funny nobody mentions how important a CO is for CAS. You can't fly low and go blindly into combat. This is what your suppose to do.
1. Put marker on target not just shitty coordinates.
2. Tell CO
3. Inform CO of obstacles such as AA.
4. CO decides if CAS should be sent in.
5. CO puts EXACT marker on target.
6. CAS rapes it.
Here is a revolutionary idea for pubbers. Go CO is you want the cobra. In the end of the day, flying low or high, CAS will work a lot better with a CO. I wish the devs can make it so that if you don't have a CO, you don't get any air support.

My edvice for barracuda pilots is to go as high as they can over the island and then storm right down to the LZ fast and furious, that way the AA wont have time to lock untill ur below the tre line

Flying low on Muttrah is the best, Its like flying through the Death Star in Star Wars
Just stay low, and the AA won't be able to hit you, Because you got buildings to cover you

Re: Chopper Flying: Game v. Reality
I want to clarify my previous post, the transport hueys should go low, but the cobra should not. It is hard to hit anything for the gunner when moving fast at low level and if you happen to get an apc behind you are probably dead. And if you move slowly through the streets you are an easy targets for almost everything. Howering high and as far away from the front as the view distance allows can be a great way to rack up kills. The HAT kit is a danger though, preferrably you should always be sliding to the side.
Edit: Target aquisition is also much harder from a ground perspective, the top down view makes it easy to find enemies on rooftops also.
