Littlebird Towed going full speed/ LB Speed increase

Post by stealth420 »

I just got done with a round on Qwai River.

I was useing the littlebird going full speed at about 300 altitude, i do a strafing run on one of the bridges that crosses the river.

I expend all my ammo and now im down at 200 altitude.

Im heading back to base when all of a sudden WAM !!!!!!!!!! A tow hits me on the underside and that chopper is no more......

This says alot about the speed of the littlebird in project reality.

Ive always wondered why it is not as fast as the chinese recon bird which reaches a top speed of 700 knots, and the LB can only reach about 450 knots while diving.

INCREASE LB SPEED PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe the speed shown in all aircraft are kmp/h, however they cant be trusted at all ;)

But the LB does really have to go faster as IRL its faster than a huey IIRC..

the lb does seem a bit slow for what it is.

LB
# Maximum speed: 152 knots (175 mph, 282 km/h)
# Cruise speed: 135 knots (155 mph, 250 km/h)
# Range: 232 nmi (430 km, 267 mi) at 5,000 ft
# Service ceiling: 18,700 ft (5,700 m)
# Rate of climb: 2,061 ft/min (10.5 m/s)

Huey
* Maximum speed: 135 mph (217 km/h; 117 kn)
* Cruise speed: 125 mph (109 kn; 201 km/h)
* Range: 315 mi (274 nmi; 507 km)
* Service ceiling: 19,390 ft (5,910 m) (Dependent on environmental factors such as weight, outside temp., etc)
* Rate of climb: 1,755 ft/min (8.92 m/s)
* Power/mass: 0.15 hp/lb (0.25 kW/kg)

Real mature.

I kind of agree with the OP but only because of the statistics below (his post) which show the LB being faster than the huey. Which of course means the LB needs to be faster for realism.

The OP didn't exactly set the bar very high.

The OP is pretty ridiculous, the "explanation" of the event is no where near descriptive enough. he asks for a speed increase without any data on the speed of the ingame LB compared to RL or the speed of the TOW ingame or real life.

And simply put, you give players weapons they will try kill anything they can even if its highly unlikely to happen and the weapon isnt designed to do it. For example, i bet if i tried hard enough i could hit a LB with a UGL... if i did, would that warrant the UGL being nerfed or the LB speed being increased? no.

fanboy of what? the littlebird? the TOW ? Care to elaborate?

Either way my post still stands, the original post was a rant based on a single bad experience with no facts or evidence to back it up and a request to change the game because of this. care to disagree kirra?

Gazz you cant say something huighly unlikely to happen. WHile IRL it wont but in game choppers are regularly shot at by TOWs, and if they are moving, even unawares of it should more often than not not be able to hit a fast moving chopper. If hes going slow or hover then the pilot damned well deserves to be towed.

I dont really see what your point is, but see my UGL analogy and jonnys post:
According to wikipedia the TOW goes around 1000 km/h, and littlebird goes about 282 km/h.
I'm not surprised that it can hit you, given that its traveling over 3.5 times faster than you are.

As for being able to hit you, lets say he has a 500m window. You are traveling 78 m/s at most. That gives roughly 6.4 seconds to get you. 6.4 seconds is easily enough to get a LB even if you have to aim in their direction first, given that you were on an attack run he was probably already aiming at the area you were going to go.

IMO, the LB's speed is perfect as it is. Its just enough that you can evade things, but slow enough that you can go round cities between buildings at speed without bumping into everything because the turning is shocking at higher speeds. Yes ok I could then turn the speed down to 60% instead of 80% but still. It is unlikely that you will get hit by a tow, as long as your not moving directly away from the thing, move at an angle, make it harder for him. This is the problem with pilots these days, they seem to think direct is best if asked to get there quickly. Always take the safer route, not the faster route, no matter what the other idiots who complain about you going the "wrong way" say. But yeah, TOWS that have been fired are very open to imminent APC attack =]. I know I diverged from the post, going from attack LB to transport, but same applies. Don't head at a TOW head on (I assume that's what you where doing to try and kill it) if its manned.

I agree with Gazz. The tow is a missle you can direct. You can direct the missle into the belly of a low flying heli. Give someone a weapon that is supposed to combat one thing, turn it into an AA (thanks to the players great aim which came from practice and calculus) and you get the phenomena known as objectivity....? The abillity to take one thing that is meant to be used one way and use it in a new way. It human to do this.

LIVE WITH IT! Now, go put a tow on the fortress and shoot down all the hueys u can!

I think the phenomena might actually be known as resourcefulness. Either way, the point stands.

OP's suggestion is kind of dumb.

Increasing LB speed = less time for him to even do the strafing run...

If a TOW hit him... it is his fault for flying in a straight line back to base.

it never happens in real life because:

A) Most armies using similar weapons systems have not had much combat against enemies with small fast moving aircraft. but I'm sure if the situation arises where that's the only thing they have. that they would use it. Since the introduction of the TOW as a weapon in the military have there been many conflicts where TOW missiles were used anywhere within the vicinity of enemy aircraft? (ie. troops in Afghanistan arn't going to have helicopters for targets anyways, thus it will likely never happen there.)

B) Even if such contact as mentioned above has occurred, it was likely that they would have had a better weapon for the job anyways. (ie. if i had both a tow and a stinger, i would choose the stinger to shoot at the chopper. but in a situation where i only had the TOW, obviously i'd use that)
Information in the hands of a critical thinker is invaluable, information alone is simply dangerous.

If you haven't noticed, TOW missiles will very likely just self destruct because you have to move the sight so fast to keep up with the airplane the missile loses track of where it is and where to go.

A bad workman blames his tools.

Because its utterly impossible that this could be due to unskilled pilots or skilled TOW gunners, must be a problem with the game...

Moved to suggestions

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.
