Not sure if it's been mentioned or not, but I've thought for a long time that optics/non-optics should have an up/down arrow on the kits to change the weapon, like in vanilla BF2 how you can switch weapons for each kit.

There is few other ways how to do it.

(look at Wookies sniper mod and latest sandbox.)

I'm not sure if its been mentioned yet but ScoutStrike from the BF2 Sniper clan WOoKie has created a dedicated sniper mod which bullet drop and all that jazz. One of the best things about it is the weapon selection screen:

This proves that the system that the OP is suggesting is possible in the engine. Obviously it would probably have to be spawn kits only, and I'm not sure if its possible to keep it side-locked so both sides can't select each-others weapons.

:-D i mentioned this mod allready about 3 times and i'm quite sure, the devs are aware of it as well
