"Look, over there *points with finger* behind that tall tree"
"Look, over there, 250 degrees, behind that tall tree"

At least I could assume that it's easier to first look for general direction, then a land mark in the general area, and then for a human or w/e shaped object. I'm not a military advisor though. And as it has been stated multiple times, pointing can't be represented correctly ingame. I think the compass does it job the way it is, but I would like to see a small simple optical illusion 3Dish 2D compass. Not a priority IMO though.

Maybe if it was removed, and people did just as Blackwater said they'd rely on NESW directions and the clock only as general direction indicators and start giving detailed descriptions of the enemies position.
people still have problems with the current compass removing it or parts of it will lead to chaos for me because i play on public servers

Clock directions will never work, unless they are exactly like a compass, just different numbers....but then it makes no sense :/
You know where your point man is because it's the direction you're travelling in... it doesn't require you to look at the point man at all, if you're the rear guy and your point man calls out "contact 12 o'clock", look directly behind you....

Maybe PR pub players can't do this sort of thing, oh well.

I guess every well trained soldier should now basic directions while going into battlefield. So to have main directions showing on screen all the time is not so un-real.

I think it should stay like this, in RL, your situational awareness is very different compared to it ingame. And because you can't point and look around as well ingame, i think the compass is a very good alternative.

people say clock directions are all that you need to yell,

what if your traveling at a comb or semi large distance apart?
"you say 250 from my position" or "9 o'clock from my position" people are still going to look the same way, yes. and you will have to think yes.

but what if that person is turned around and you dont know it.
at least with a compass, you have north is north, south is south, east is east, west is west.
With only 12 o'clock and such, its constantly changing to where you are walking, so by the person in the middle saying "9 o'clock"- but facing backwards, will be saying an enime on his left. the friendly troops to his left will look right, when they should be looking to their left, because the enime is on their location. the friendly troops on the right of him, they will look to the right or left, depending on distance from target located, but it will still be completely the wrong direction, unless they got lucky.

with the compass, they can say WEST OF ME- and everyone will have a better location of there to look then a 9 o'clock

also, when your walking with your squad through the woods, how many actually know the direction they are heading without looking at the compass?

Will it Magnetic, or True North? - Sorry I just got the Iphone 4 and those are 2 options that I have to choose from when using the Compass.

I 100% agree Compas only shows when your map is up thats a great idea :D lool... YES its usefull to figure out where enemys are in a fire fight but its SO much more realistic that if your looking at your map .. your looking at your compass...

No compass ( way to Simply give a direction of enemy ) the More team work there would have to be ....

I was reading the posts on this here ... and i like the idea of ..

You put your map up ( Compass appears ) you put your map down and compass stays up for ... 3 or so seconds after and fades away...

On a second thought the compass works just fine as it is, although we can always try something new.
A 2-D or 3-D in the corner with coloured tabs could possibly make things easier.

One of the few absolutes we have for orientation in PR is the compass. Unless you are using Mumble and directional audio, it's hard to know who has spotted a target. If so, the o' clock system could be reasonable.

I don't know what soldiers in the field use for orientation and if they have an easily accessible compass at all times. I'm also not too sure on how many in a squad actually carry maps. Perhaps only the SL should get these assets.

I think that the current system is perfect... Opening the map for a compass would only hinder combat situational awareness instead of helping it. Truely, if a squad is switched on, no one in the squad would engage targets untill everyone in the squad is ready and "aware" of the enemy position. Put in PR usually when you see a target he has also spotted you. When spotting targets and reporting it to squad members, a simple system I use works all the time...

" (What you've spotted) (direction) (obvious landmark) (wait if more information is needed) (Bearing) (threat level) "

Example : "Enemy man spotted North north west, Top of hill........ 255 degrees low threat"

I like to include the threat level that way people who see the target can assess wether its important for them to either move to help engage, watch the squads six, run like hell or find cover. More information can include distance, what weaponry the target has etc etc.

You can also use the same system to call in enemy incoming...

Example : " Incoming North north west, Top of hill........ 255 degrees low threat inaccurate rifle fire"
A soldier isn't as strong as his weapon, a weapon is as strong as the soldier.

"Incoming North north west, inside bunker........ 255 degrees HIGH THREAT Run like HELL!"
