[Vehicle] CH-53A Heavy-Lift Helicopter WIP

Post by Shovel »

I admit, I do play CoD:MW2 from time to time, and I am fan of the Pavelow. No, I am not some nearsighted idiot who learned about the helicopter through the game, I knew about it well before, and I have noticed that is is misrepresented in the game.

SO....I decided to develop one for BF2. The MH-53 is the one represented in the game, but it was recently retired because of production costs. But the CH-53 is still in use by the USMC as a heavy lift/transport helicopter.

Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I originally altered the asset from AIX, and with every update it has become different. I have NO idea how to texture models, even though i know that i have to paint a color layer and a shininess layer and etc., but I do not know how to do this.

Also, the Heli still has that BF2 "vanillaness" that makes it slow, startup in 4 seconds, among others. I read somewhere that it is comparable to the Chinook, and I need to know how I could give it the same control and handling as it.

And see you on the Battlefield Soldier!

Tread carefully, you'll need to explain a bit more about how you used the AIX asset otherwise I'll consider this plagiarism.

im really just using the aix one for reference, but im not really getting anywhere. i have not used the aix model. i should really be looking for a tutorial for creating a helicopter, because i cant find one anywhere. my first post is an overstatement, i have not real helicopter, i am just playing around with the settings on others.

Erm, my English isn't the best one, but there is something odd between the two posts...

I prefer not to know what you wanted to do.

If you don't know how to model a chopper, I believe you don't have modeling skills.

Good luck with making this BUT, if we see any use of another mods/games model (being more than just use for reference) then there is no chance we will be using your model and the appropriate action will be taken against you.

CH-53A is no longer in service, and the CH-53D Sea Stallion is now in only one medium lift squadron, IIRC. For heavy lift the Marines use the CH-53E Super Stallion, which is a very similar airframe with 3 engines and a different rotor. An older Sea Stallion / Pave Low variant might not be a good base to start with.

Also, I have never heard about any "fancy remote weapons station" being adopted or even for use on the Marine Super Stallions. GAU-21 (M3M) and/or GAU-16 (M2 aircraft pintle mount variant) on the ramp and in the side doors is the usual weapons loadout.

Okay i'm modeling mine in 3ds max 2011. Sorry about the AIX confusion. I am not good at wording things.

Where can you buy Max 9?
I'm a student who benefits from the free Autodesk software for students program.

You can't get Max 9 through the student download program, you'll have to source it on your own. If you can't find a copy, don't let that stop you, it's still worth learning to model one accurately, and depending on the levels of errors in the backport it may still be usable

At worst, it's a very good learning experience.

Can we get a picture of any work you've already done on this heli? If you do successfully make a CH-53E i will have your babies :) The AIX model is an MH-53J by the way, and is retired.

I have a very complete set of very high resolution reference pics of a USN MH-53E Sea Dragon - the Navy's identical twin brother to the CH-53E.

You can get a zip file with them here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10420527/MH-53E.rar

The differences between the two aircraft are below.

According to the Wikipedia entry:
It has enlarged sponsons to provide substantially greater fuel storage and endurance. It also retained the in-flight refueling probe, and could be fitted with up to seven 300 US gallon (1,136 liter) ferry tanks internally. The MH-53E digital flight-control system includes features specifically designed to help tow minesweeping gear
From interview with a USN pilot (here: Korea-stationed helicopter squadron touch down in Iwakuni for vertical replenishment training )
The aircraft used for the training was an MH-53E Sea Dragon, which is similar to the CH-53E Super Stallion used in the Marine Corps.

The main difference is that the CH-53 is able to drop its fuel tanks and has dual lift points, whereas the MH-53E?s fuel tanks are attached to the aircraft and only has a single lift point, said Lt. Troy Kelly, helicopter aircraft commander for HM-14 Det. 1.
In short, these should be very suitable for references if you're looking to model the CH-53E. Only problem is I wasn't really thinking straight when I was at fleet week getting these pictures, and didn't get very good front/side overview shots :|

On the other hand, I have extremely good high-res shots covering the most of the instrument panel, as well as really good shots from the back, and some reasonably decent side and front (oblique) shots.

Also check the US Navy and US Marine Corps websites' photo galleries. They have tons of *very* high-res images to work with and are constantly updated. CH-53Es are pulling a lot of the weight in aid to Pakistan, so new pics of them can be seen almost daily, as of late.
