Squad Leader Academy

Post by Bolt_M00se »

Inspired by the Project Reality Training thread and recently being in servers that lacked competent squad leaders or had people (myself included) that don't feel comfortable leading a squad yet, overall creating a frustrating match for everyone.

Overall this will be a bit more straight forward than the Project Reality Training thread in that:

Anyone who feels they have something to teach in regards to Squad Leading will post in this thread with the following information

Date and Time(Timezone) of session
In game Alias
Preferred Language
Server
Squad to join on server
In game VOIP/Mumble Preference
Add lastly they can mention if they are going to be focussed on specific subjects for this training session.

Any ideas/suggestions/critiques?

Thanks

Some poeple that are drawn to being in charge and some not. That said some poeple may want to lead but don't know how to use the squad leader radio or how to use mortars; unlocking them with binoculars, using the calculater etc.

Well, I believe I know most of the ins & outs of the game...

And that's not enough. It's all about adaptation.

I've seen epic SLs fail. And fail SLs rise to epicdom.

Just saying... if you fail once, don't give up, because it is part of the game to fail.

Just plan ahead... USE THE KICK BUTTON... The SL Academy should be something like KillerBee256 proposed - SL mechanics. You could teach 'em a few tricks with dealing with SMs... But it boils down (the SM part) to what Redamare said.
Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple! :D

If somebody could give some tips on how to get control of the squad members, that would be a big help cuz that's my only prob. I just don't seem to be able to influence them enough to get them to do what I want them to do. Maybe I'm too nice.... TIME TO BE MEANS!!!! lol

use voIP and A LOT OF MUMBLE!!!!!!!!

Primary focus
  • building FOB's
  • KITS distribution
  • SQUAD menuvers
  • Mumble
  • Directing squad members
  • Taking Flags
  • Useing Radio
  • Using team Support
  • Communication
I would be most available this week between 9am-5pm and if you can get a private server to host this i would be happy to help. Just message me if you get any other word.

This is a good idea and i am glad you intend on helping to empower other players.

I wrote up a huge "advice" response and realized that it not only didn't make much sense, but it doesn't really belong in this thread, :(

I wouldn't say it's about being nice or being mean; when I lead, I'm generally light-hearted, I joke around and treat everyone like equals. But situations dictate how you act; when we're engaged, I'm pretty serious and focused on the action and relaying information and orders. When people get into arguments, talk over others, or generally disobey, you respond with the degree of seriousness required (which isn't high, because we're all humans and should value each other despite what's going on in a game) and proceed to apply the leverage you have as a SL--warn, kick, or report rogue SM.

The other day two guys in my squad got into it calling each other names and getting a bit heated about religious issues. I was very light-hearted up until then when I used my powerful, booming voice :D to break up the verbal melee and let them know next one to bring it up is going to get kicked. It was fun and civil from then on :)

I know leading can have it's pressures. Even in a game environment, it can be a bit daunting for other people to be staring at you asking, "What do we do, squad leader?" Don't sweat it because most players are very forgiving, especially if you're new, and the ones who get agitated are doing it for their own reasons, not cause you're evil or anything :) Once again, don't take it too seriously, we're all players in a game and we're all much more important as humans than as PR players.

When I'm in the mood to be a squad leader I lead diplomaticly, so I seldom have issues "controling them". However you do sometimes get idiots who join your sqaud and then ignore you and run off with a sniper kit. You kick those poeple from your squad, maybe get the admin to kick them if there are bad enough.
