What was Op Phoenix?

Post by havoc1482 »

So I was looking though the "History of Project Reality" post and A removed map caught my eye: Operation Phoenix.

Can anyone tell me anythign about this map? Special characteristics? Who made it? ect.

I'm just curious really. I like things relating to Phoenix :)

MEC v USMC, it had a very similar feel to Asad Khal, however in the centre was a city akin to Ejod. The US started of on the south side of the map near some big grain silos and a farm, and had to walk up to the town. MEC started on the very north side IIRC and both teams met up attacking eachother in the centre. There was a train depot sort of deal on the east side which had some awesome combat. Shame it was removed, would make a great map if it had a redux.

The USMC had to move through either of two ravines to reach the city proper. Normally they would get stuck sending bodies down two "death-pipes" for the 30 minutes or so the round lasted. Gameplay was very vBF2-ish, with people going alone to try to get kills. Otherwise the US just got beat to hell. Never liked it, glad it's gone.

How come the graphics back then were better?

The graphic was exactly the same.
I really enjoyed OP Phonix when I start playing PR, but the map is so small and the gameplay wouldnt fit for 0.96 anymore.

Pretty sure it was a 1km, of which there are 3 still in game.

Ahh, the good old days :)
It was a decent map for its time, but PR has indeed come very far. And thank god for that, back then it wasnt much different from VBF2.

An incredible map... tears were shed when it got taken out!

Luckily it's on the new Co-Op!

Does anyone have this map for download? Is is it lost to time? I have this urge to just play it even if I'm by myself on a local server haha

It was in PRSP a lot. Perhaps it was in that last map pack, or another relatively recent one?

It was nice, had a lot of good firefights there, but as PR got bigger, the map felt smaller. Not a bad map, but not enough of the map was used is my opinion. A revamp of the map would be something I'd like to see :) .

PR has outgrown the map itself, but would be cool to have it in some 2-4km desert map, as a settlement.

Ahahaa.. Those guns look well boss. Obviously i'm glad they aren't in the current incarnation but.. it'd be a helluva fun round to have them just for a 20min skirmish :P

Anyways, that map does look very vBF2. I think it's amazing to see how far the mod has come (I am a newbie really, only been here a year or so).
