What router are you using? Since you said Comcast is your ISP, are you just using the Arris modem/router that they rent out to you or do you have your own router running off of that? I don't know for sure but I am pretty sure that you could open specific ports through the Arris modem's configuration page (accessed by putting 10.0.0.1 in your web browser). But I have found that the configuration menus on these separate routers have way more gaming-friendly configuration options, like device/media prioritization, etc.

I turned VOIP off in the vBF2 options menu as well, I don't know if that would make a difference for you.

If you are still having disconnect problems I would un-install everything then just start with vanilla BF2 installed. Join servers on there and see if you can get that running without a hitch before installing PR.

And I did test the Team Speak stuff before I opened the ports on my router and was still disconnecting, I haven't tried playing with Team Speak on since opening the ports, but my guess would be that it shouldn't cause any disconnects. I haven't been able to play a ton since opening my ports, but I have played both vBF2 and PR enough to where it would usually disconnect me before, and I haven't disconnected once.

Another update from me,

So I bought and set up the new router a couple of days ago. Upon doing so I fired up PR and got into some games, and to my disappointment, I was still disconnecting from servers after a random amount of time. So I pouted for a while then I went back to the drawing board. For the 1,000th time I uninstalled PR and BF2, and I set my router to its default settings. I then only installed vanilla BF2, as my plan this time was to make sure that I had ZERO problems with vBF2 before even touching PR.

I went into some vBF2 games and was getting the same disconnecting behavior. I went into the BF2 options and disabled VOIP (as I saw this suggested on some threads), but that didn't really seem to make a difference. Then I went to Free Help Forwarding Ports - PortForward.com and searched for my router, then opened the port forwarding page for BF2. I followed the instructions and opened all the ports associated with BF2. After doing this (I am pretty sure I rebooted my router and computer as well) I once again joined some vBF2 servers. I was able to play for around an hour on a couple different servers, and to my surprise I didn't get randomly disconnected once. There were a couple times where my ping got high and I got the message "There is a problem with your connection" for a few seconds, and each time I expected to be disconnected, but I didn't.

The only real problem I ran into was that I was getting kicked from servers on map changes with a specific error message: "This server only allows players with unmodified content to join. Revert your version of Battlefield 2 to the current official version to join." I looked into this issue and from forums it seems like people are getting this error message because they are loading maps too quickly. I am just going to not really worry about this issue right now since there seem to be no issues associated with re-joining the server.

I want to stress that there is a difference between opening specific ports for a certain game, and just DMZing your computer and opening ALL of its ports. I've read that not only is DMZing your computer less secure, but it can cause way more network traffic than you actually want, and opening the specific ports can actually be a better idea. I had DMZed my computer before and it didn't seem to be helping with this issue, and this is the first time I have tried just opening the specific ports, and from what I saw last night it seemed to be working OK. I hope I am not jinxing it, and I obviously need to spend some more time gaming and testing, but I haven't had a disconnect free experience like last night ever, so I hope that I am on to something.

Thats a damn fine job there. I usually dont recommend DMZ to anyone ( DMZ - turn of firewall and open all your ports ) but in some cases where users actually dont have any idea what they are doing I just tell them to do so, cause I dont have time neither they understand what Im talking about when I say forward your ports in your router.

Looks like US users on specific - Comcast provider are suffering the most out of this issue, and its not the game, its their router setup.

Yeah, so the problem re-appeared for me. My fix seemed to be working well before but now I am back to randomly disconnecting from servers again... Great.

ipv4 what? External IP is of no significance in NAT its internal IP ( LAN IP ). So if you have DHCP enabled in router, and most users probably do, you need to set a fixed IP for yourself and then do a port forwarding.

No, I have not set a static IP address for my PC, I was just using the default addressing as you say.

I don't think that my IP address changed though, every single time I checked what it was via "ipconfig" it was always the same. Do you really think that will make a difference if I give my computer a static IP address?

If your LAN IP is not changing and you've forwarded ports properly for that IP then there is no need to do it.

Do you have a static IP ( external ) or its dynamic? Do you have DHCP server running on your router or you're being assigned internal IP from your provider ( remote DHCP ) - not likely.

I am almost positive my router is running its own DHCP service and is automatically assigning IP addresses to my devices. When I forwarded the ports for BF2, I used the IP address that was assigned to my PC, and like I said that IP address has not changed...

Edit: When I hooked up my new router to my Comcast cable modem, I didn't give my router a static IP address or anything in the configuration page, it just got assigned an IP address automatically from the modem, that IP address was 10.0.0.2

And when I got to the stages of installing Punkbuster I had some difficulties. Firstly, the guide told me to install and run PBsetup, which I did, but it didn't have me run PBsvcs, which is the actual process of installing Punkbuster, and the services like PnkBstrA, B, etc. so I think I hit some problems there... Furthermore, when I ran PBsetup, I got an error message from Windows saying that "This program may not have installed correctly", what the hell is that about? It gives you the options of either saying that the program did install correctly, or "Install using Windows recommended settings". I don't know what I am supposed to do in that situation or if anyone else is seeing that behavior.

When I finished installing everything, I went in to a totally empty server to test. I ran around for a few minutes before I got the tell tale screen freeze then the kick to the server list with the message "Lost connection to the server". If I am getting kicked from a totally empty server with the same symptoms as a full server I am less inclined to believe it is some anonymous networking issues and more inclined to believe it has something to do with god damn Punkbuster... Can anyone give some more insight into this? I can't seem to find any fool proof way to install Punkbuster totally correctly.

Hey Massive,

So after uninstalling/removing everything BF2/Punkbuster/PR related from my computer, I will re install everything in this order:

1. BF2
2. Punkbuster
3. PR

And you are saying that I should first download and run PB setup, THEN download and run PB services? Not the other way around?

Either way you do it its fine. Ive never seen any difference in either way. PBSVC installs PB into windows system while pb setup is actually updating PB for BF2. Either way you do it, run it as admin and reboot after instal. Follow the guide in stickies and you cant miss.

I have been having this issue for a month now....and I believe it's my isp or the modem it self. Reason I think this is because I move around a lot and I have had the isp I have now...before but with a different modem and it worked fine before. Then I moved to my dad's place for 2 weeks. Different isp there and every thing worked fine. Now in my current apt with old wiring and a different modem I get disconnected every 20 minutes no matter what I do and I have done every possible fix within the forum and nothing has worked....so that's what's up.

my modem is an arris model# WBM760A
i believe my netgear router is fine because i have had it for many years.
i did try port forwarding on my netgear router and still same issue of disconnecting every 20 min.
Arma 2/3 doesn't appear to have this disconnecting issue when i play those games online.
anyways...its no big deal, i plan to spend alot of my free gaming time on GTA5 and ArmA3.

But, for hours of research I have concluded this;

The issue for us COMCAST users is the cause of comcasts 'speed boost'...
The boost occurs for about 15.4minutes then it stops. Which results in the infamous disconnect.

When I had comcast BEFORE in May and such, I did not have the issues like this. Weird.

So as I have said, Comcast is my ISP and I originally was just leasing their "all-in-one" cable modem/router/wireless gateway, model number ARRIS TM602G/CT. When I first started running into this issue (disconnecting from servers all of the time), and I had tried every suggested software-related fix listed in this thread to no avail, I determined that it must be some kind of hardware issue.

So the next thing I did was go out and get a new, gaming-friendly router. The one that I ended up going with was a Linksys EA3500, it was highly reviewed and looked like a solid choice. I installed and ran that router off of my ARRIS cable modem (so that modem was still in the picture). I got that installed but eventually I was seeing the same behavior. So for a couple weeks I just gave up and did other stuff.

Then I decided, screw it, I will just buy a new cable modem and I will return the one I am leasing from Comcast so I don't have to pay the rental fee each month. I went out and bought a Motorola Surfboard SB6121 and got it all hooked up, then ran my router off of that. Since doing that, I have played some PR (not a ton), and I have yet to get randomly disconnected from a server. I am not going to proclaim that I have resolved the issue, because when I thought I had fixed it before with the new router it reared its ugly head once again. But I am definitely hopeful, and will keep testing and report back if anything changes.

Long story short, the ARRIS "all-in-one" gateway modem that Comcast leases out to you is a piece of shit and is not optimized for online gaming. If you are serious about playing games online and don't want to deal with networking issues in PR or any other games you play, invest in a better modem and a gaming-tuned router.

TL;DR: After trying all the software/networking fixes that didn't work, I changed to a different cable modem + router. Since then, no random disconnects (fingers crossed).
