Contacts quick identification(new player)

Post by josefveiga »

Hi

I started playing recently and have been working on improving my basic skills. Altough i see i'm improving many of my squad member skills, i have a problem that keeps owning me in combat.

When i get myself into a situation that i have a contact in my sight, and he is targeting me also, i usually die if the contact is an enemy, because i fail to identify if he is friendly or not (like when i go around a corner and there is a guy there 10m away). If its a battle between for example Hamas and IDF, it's ok because the 2 forces have very distinct gear, but if both forces have greenish camo it becomes hard to distinguish in a split second.

Is there an helpfull rule-of-thumb to quickly make the distinction?

Not sure if my problem is from situational/positional awareness of my squad and team, or running the game only on medium settings, or something else...

Thx for the help

Blackburn made that a long time ago. Although many factions have woodland camo too though. It's mostly about identifying friendlies really. Look how they look and memorize it. All else is enemy. But always check your map though.

This thread should have some more tips perhaps :D

My tip is bind the map to a quick key, I use left alt, then constantly check you map to see were friendly might appear.

For example I check the map and we're the most Sth squad, so everything Sth is enemy. Checking the map is very useful, but with time you'll get used to the tiny differences between factions.

Yeah, map is useful. But sometimes it's hard to tell because enemies and friendlies are close together, or there's not enough time to check the map.

In that case... Well, only practice can help, I'm afraid. It'll get easier to identify kits with time :)

If the enemy is close enough, you might be able to tell from the weapons and equipment he's carrying, even if you can't tell which camo pattern it is - a G3 looks quite different from an M4. But that only works on very close range. And there might of course be the rare chance that a team mate has picked up an enemy weapon - though what happens then is his responsibility, imo.

Play as a medic and kill'em all. If you happen to kill a friendly, you can always revive him :D

After you devote a time in PR, you will get the hang of it.

But, the only 2 factions I have issues with is the Germans and Russians on Silent Eagle. Lol.

And most of the time you are aiming at the 'contact' it's a enemy.

Thx for the replies

That link for the different camos: uouqd77e.jpg - directupload.net
is gonna be my rule-of-thumb for awhile.
But i take it that from the replies here, and the ones on that other thread, the real deal is to distinguish it instantaneouly through all the details i am currently overlooking with my lack of experience.

Awareness! Need more of that!

Edit:
And yes, i mostly play medic atm, because while not being an efficient fighter, i keep the ppl around me up.

Also sometimes i find myself trying to revive enemies. Good thing this isnt realistic to the point they'd get back up again and shoot me lol.

I often find the shape of their helmet quite useful as an indicator. They often have quite a distinct shape. And if that doesn't work just their kit geoms.

If you cant identify enemies easily then you should not be clearing corners but instead hanging back and maybe covering the medic.

Also, situational awareness will help you greatly. If you know that your squad members are the only friendlies around then you can keep track of your squadmates and shoot at everything else.

Like others have said helmets are good identifiers now. For me the nam maps are the hardest to identify who's who. I for example use their feet to tell quickly. If its got sandals on its VC.

Turning up my Gamma in the Catalyst Control Center to the value 1.5 did resolve the problem for me.

I think the low Gamma or general brightness in Project Reality could be a problem for some people.

helmet shape and silhouette color, is usually how i identify quickly. At mid to long range distances it all comes down to color. Some say it's hard to tell but if you know the subtle difference between the US marines desert camo vs the MEC uniform for example you're golden.

average color interpretation examples at mid - long range:

USMC temperate marpat - Dark orangish Brown
USMC Arid marpat - light orange-ish tan almost off white
USArmy - light gray
MEC - yellowish light tan. often contrasted with black or dark green accents
Chinese desert - light tan with a touch of green
Chinese foliage - light green almost grayish
Russian foliage - dark bluish green
British woodland - dark yellowish green
Canadian Arid Cadpat - dark tan with yellowish boots
Canadian Temperate Cadpat - if the player is dumb, very dark green. if the player is average neigh f*cking invisible.
Information in the hands of a critical thinker is invaluable, information alone is simply dangerous.

On insurgency w/ Taliban and Insurgents you should have no problem at all finding who's, who.

But it's understandable on darker maps. But also, on desert maps like Kashan, I do get confused sometimes with the US and the MEC. From longer distances of course.

It's also easy to identify the french. Lol, Big Blue Helmets.

But, it does get easy on after you play like 10 different factions. you will get used to tell the diff. between good and bad guys.

Definitely helmets and heads.

AND YOUR MAP!!!

Learn which way is north, south, east and west very quickly, and check your map for a little blue or green dot in the direction you are aiming. If you see no such dot, it's an enemy.

So on maps where it is trouble (after practice your primary issue becomes ID at range) I typically look at guns first. On some maps where it is easy to tell up close (MEC vs. USMC) it can be an issue at range. That is where I immediately look at the gun first for an easy confirm. Again, it takes practice, but it makes it easy.

Helmets are always good as well.

But unfortunately the only way to make it a close to non-issue is practice.

The best solution is to update friendlies position and to memorize it.

I think the best option is to always check your map, even when you think you are 100% certain. Granted, there will be situations where it's not practical to do so.. I use my gut feeling and it rarely fails me ;)

I went ahead and compiled my screenshots to make an updated version of this.
