Black screen, no sound, can only hard reset
I've been having this issue (so far in ArmA3 and Insurgency) where my screen goes black (or white or gray), sound reverberates a bit and cuts off. The computer is still running and I can only reset or shut it down.
So far I've tried reverting NVIDIA drivers after Googling that some had issues with the new drivers, my GPU/CPU temps were around 65C at crash.
GPU: Asus GTX 770,
CPU: i5 3570K,
mobo: Z77-HD3,
PSU: Antec TruePower Classic 750W TP-750C
I'll be reseating the GPU, since that worked the last time, but last time I had error reports, no errors anywhere this time.

how is your rig performing under load? Like launch benchmark software and see if everything runs smooth. Also, if you have empty drive somewhere, itstall clean system, and then run benchmarks to put your sys under load.
Either something to do with power or component is failing OR OS is fucked up.
Also, current OS, check application and system logs for warnings errors etc.

Win 7 64bit, there are no errors in Event viewer besides Kernel Power, which is probably from restarting.

Hmm... I think I had that issue exacly on win 8 with kernel power. Something to do with fast shutdown or smt, I had black screen as well. Check how to fix it. It might end your problem

Re: Black screen, no sound, can only hard reset
I had the same thing a week ago or so.
So what I'm suggesting is that perhaps something messed up your settings and now whenever you launch a game, your GPU gets weird commands to increase it's clocks in an irregular fashion. The thing was; my CPU and GPu fans were clogged with dust without me knowing it. That made my whole computer slower and the CPU bottlenecked my GPU.
So I tried increasing the core/memory clock with MSi Afterburner and had exactly the same thing you're talking about.
My screen became black, whatever sound was playing just started stuttering and the computer didn't react. I could only turn it on or off.

Weird commands from where? I completely reinstalled nV drivers (GeForce experience and all that). I didn't uninstall Intel drivers, but that didn't avert the black screen before.Careless wrote: So what I'm suggesting is that perhaps something messed up your settings and now whenever you launch a game, your GPU gets weird commands to increase it's clocks in an irregular fashion.

Have you checked the dump for crash reports or is that only on a blue screen?
Can you try a known good mobo? What socket are you?

I installed the GTX 770 in another computer where it ran fine, confirmed it's most likely my motherboard. Getting a new one.
For reference, this is the exact same problem I have/had and description says it was mobo in that case too.

Happened again with Asus Z97-P and Core i5 4690 only a few hours after I installed them together with the new GTX 770 that I got when I claimed warranty.
I'm at loss for words (and the money I spent on new mb and cpu).

Was that was a fresh installation of Windows or not?

Reinstalled Windows after the new mobo and HDD didn't get along, without reformatting.

So how consistent is the electric in your house?
In theory you could be getting power spikes/drops that are causing this?
Try to remove the discete GPU, use the integrated iGPU, see if the similar/same crash happen?

Power's fine, no blackouts or storms around here.
Crash doesn't happen with Intel graphics, have been using onboard for a few weeks.
I made a more detailed post on guru3d forums

Re: Black screen, no sound, can only hard reset
I tried with another PSU, Corsair VS650 and it still crashed. Also swapped RAM sticks, crashed.
Tried underclocking with MSI Afterburner and unless there's something more to it than moving the core clock slider to the left, crashed.
I keep Googling in effort to find a solution and it seems there's tons of "my nvidia gpu black screens and no idea how to fix it" topics.

I believe I managed to fix my issue.
I followed the instructions in this post and I think updating my GPU BIOS also contributed.
I set up a game of ArmA3 and left it running for 8 hours while I was at work and it didn't crash on me.

This is frightening to watch.
So you've got new everything and it keeps crashing?
Can you do a swap for an AMD card?
