Grenade Launcher Smoke

Post by TBoy205 »

THREAD TITLE:
[1430] Generic Issue - Grenade Launcher Smoke
DESCRIPTION:
Compared to smoke from thrown grenades, the effect for smoke from launched grenades is small, doesn't last long enough, and is almost unusable. The primary effect on detonoation seems as it should be but the secondary effect is off. A similar issue was on tank smoke shells but has now been fixed as of 1.4. Note: This has been an issue since all smoke grenades were reworked around 1.3 I believe.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
Fire a white smoke grenade from any hand held grenade launcher.
VIDEO
Note that the duration for thrown smoke grenades is approximately 1 minute 30 seconds while the duration of launcher smoke grenades is approximately only 40 seconds. Tank round smokes are 1 minute 10 seconds.
In the following videos, note how quickly the smoke from the launcher dissipates as compared to smoke from a thrown grenade.

TESTED ON:
All kits using handheld and launched smoke grenades. Applies to all maps as well.
SETTINGS:

It is how it is meant to be, a feature, not a bug. Always been like that and probably allways will be. Vehicle and UGL launched grenades are of the explosive sort - quick single burst of smoke while the handheld smoke grenades deploy smoke for a longer ammount of time, like they do IRL.

It has not always been like this. It's completely unusable currently and is not a "feature."

It's less a matter of it not lasting long enough and more the effect is complete garbage.

I've been playing this game for over 6 years and I do not believe that it should be the way it currently is. Many veteran players also share this opinion.

I will install an older version if you do not believe that it used to be different.

It may be easier for you to see if you use it in the game for yourself. No need for comparison to other rounds, just shoot a couple of smokes and reconsider your statement of it being a feature...

And technically it's not a bug, but it needs to be fixed.

Since you don't seem to be too familiar with the game, I went ahead and made a video of the same thing but in v0.973 just for you.

I would appreciate it if you did your research before posting next time.

Thanks :)

Many thanks on the older version comparison, it really is a larger area of effect... maybe my memory is clouded by all the time that has passed since I started playing on version 0.4 (2006/7) and all the changes this mod has gone through over the years, and I knew every changelog pretty much by heart.

That is that about the "veteran" and "get familiar with the game" deal and we are done. :) A DEV will clarify if this warrants a change.

Yeah, it's virtually worthless as it it atm. Not the first person I've heard describe it as such in game either. Makes closing the distance on some maps like Banya (where Blufor have no optics) pretty hard as you have to be within the range of the thrown smoke nade to lay down cover, as you'll just get shot through the smoke from the GL.

Start watching at 01:05. The smoke lasts for almost one minute, though I think those Velum projectiles are for civil use? (airsofting? :D ), so you would think military grade 40 mm smoke grenades would be better.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that a 40mm grenade projectile does not carry nearly the same amount of "smoke" than a handgrenade does. Even more so given the fact that the already smaller 40mm projectile has to contain some form of propellant.
With that in mind it doesn't seem that strange that a 40mm smoke grenade does not screen as much or as long as their hand grenade version. About it being useless, maybe that's the case, but I feel like it's not in need of a buff tbh. You can screen stuff far away from you at the cost of not being able to do it for as long or as effectively. It's really just a trade-off.

GL smoke is fine imo. You can obstruct an enemy AR or whatever and quickly move up, smoke stays up long enough.

I agree with Frontliner.
Additionally, you are able to make the grenade explode on a vertical surfaces and that makes it very useful when enemy is annoying you from windows/rooftops.
