Role-playing is a bit too geeky, however I'd like some enthusiasm from my squad.

I just hate it when they sound like the South Park kids on the WoW episode.

for general voip regular players, just having them use a mic and speak up and contribute ideas, and intel on the situation with the squad is the first step, that and sticking together and holding down basic fire control. i.e. "ceasefire we don't want to be detected until we are at the objective.." type of orders.

Accurate voip comms, well i expect that from vets including unambigious terminology.

having fun with the tournament lads, it usually gets comms when we most need it, as most things happen without too much prompting. and i always expect Mongol to roleplay the insurgents... :P

I demand proper language and correct terminology.
I run my squads with iron-handed discipline and expect to be called "Sir".
I will henceforth be known as "Otto".
J/k
I am lazy when it comes to that and as long as you more or less follow orders and don't wander off I'm happy.
And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.

On VOIP it's mostly curt & to the point from me (I also clean up my accent from Jockinese to Armytalkinese).
On TS.... well, we try to keep it real but, well... you know.

I'll have to say that I'm usually pretty casual, but it depends on the situation. If I'm tired then I won't speak much and if I do it'll just be like "OK we got enemies to the south of Gov. office... Need help... Thanks..." But if it's on a weekend then I'll speak a lot more and will be more enthusiastic at least. I'm quite calm so I might come across as casual yeah. I hardly ever say "OH £$£% APC", infact... Don't think I've ever said that... It'll just be, "OK we got an APC incoming from the [direction], enemy that is."

I have to say though, I do prefer if people use decent military terminology. It's even better if they're American. I remember playing on Helmand Province (The US one against MEC) and we had a great squad, the squad leader whose name I can't recall and a guy called Pfc.Clark were both American and they sounded exactly like some guys out of Black Hawk Down, lol. It added a touch of realism, which is always good.

I don't really care tbh, as long as they speak. (Typing is fine)

When I get an entire squad only using VOIP like a military radio, using correct terms and only using it to relay important information then that is the day I cry a flood of joy.

It's funny, to hear the reactions to you when you're speaking to the commander and always address him as sir.

"Squad 8 to Commander, Sir, be advised.. heavy hostile movements from direction Charlie Niner to Delta, Echo Eight Niner, I say again.. heavy hostile movement from Charlie Niner to Delta, Echo, Eight Niner.. OVER"

haha.
Wasn't me.

hm...depends but i would say i mostly sound rather "cool" (i.e. casual XD)

that doesnt mean that my squads are lifeless, i like to joke and stuff (topcat can pove that ;) )but i never get hot blooded and yell in my microphone

Have you guys run into the guys that sound like this though? It's kind of like a "gay accent", except with this "I don't care" feeling played up way too much. It just pisses me off so much... I can't figure out why.

Whenever my path crosses with uber-realism squads, I usually just leave. It's great and all, but for someone who just wars online and have no idea what an Alpha, sector 1, and whatever formation is - the time it takes me to google it, I'm dead.

I don't dare to ask, cause really - I hate hearing "RTFM".

Quartermaster, Claudius: Requesting Fieldmanual.
Claudius, Quartermaster: All out, how about a whiskey?
Quartermaster, Claudius: Don't mind if I do.

And off I go.

EDIT: I'll admit, sometimes role-playing can go to far, like when people need a realistic way to communicate certain inconvience:

Squad member 1: "The enemy has some kind of secret weapon, they're disrupting the flow of time!"
Squad member 2: "What?"
Squad member 1: "Time is flowing in irregular patterns, the world is become stagnant for prolonged periods, and its hindering my ability to fight effectively!"
Squad member 2: "....what?"
Squad member 3: "He's saying he's lagging."
Squad member 1: "Oh"

Sometimes a "realistic" explaination for problem you're encountering is just so stupid its better to admit you're playing a game, even if role-playing is fun.

OMFG!!! +10 karma!

What really annoys me are peoples nicks. If Im gonna warn a person about some sniper or whatever and his nick is 'R0XXorz=OMGWTF::qparz0nz::HFswhfqwFGHW' its pretty impossible to pronounce.

How am I supposed to communicate with these persons?

I o no, i like VOIP alot. I tend to speak with an american acent even tho i have a very canadian / asian acent :) I roleplay with it. I say "Roger That", "10-4", or "Acknowladge" when im replying to my squad leader. Depends on my mood sometimes, if i feel like talking a talk if i dont i dont. easy as that.

I vary according to the squad I'm in. If it's a "professional" squad, I use short messages, if it's a "relaxed" squad, I become more chatty. But when under fire, I tend to get a little revved up. Standard phrase: "Contact, contact, contact!" And stuff like that.

I have a couple of phrases I use instead of the standard military ones, just to spice things up a little. Like "you can hang a big roger on that". :D

All depends if Im commanding or not:

CMDR MODE ->

"Squad 1 - Be advised north bridge is clear..."

"Squad 8 - Priority target, Marking now"

"All squads - Be advised, 15 infantry approaching NVCP from south"

"Squad 9 - Airstrike required, this location (attack icon goes up) enemies in the open, fire ofr effect"

"Squads 4, 6 - Airstrike coming in, your location"

"Squad 9 - you have friendlies in the area"

"Squad 8 - Spawn Car, Priority Target"

------------------------------

SquadLeader MODE ->

"Alrighty ladies n gents, lets get this armour moving... Lets Cross the river at Village, and hit em in the *** at SVCP. Load your HEAT rounds, baby" =)

"Concentrate fire at the attack marker"

"Spead out, get some IEDs on that western bridge"

"Chase him! Chase him! Spawncar LEFT! Take 'im out!"

"Watch our ***, cupola gunner, and remember to duck alot" =)

"Move forward 10 meters, hold position"

"Tank HOLD, car left side, Taking the shot.... -BOOM-.... Proceed"

----------------------

SquadMember Mode ->

"You want us to attack what? Can you give me a marker?"

"Move where? I dont see a marker?"

"Squad leader, give me 2 guys and we'll go take back South VCP"

"Stay Alive Squad Leader!"

- JM40.

P.S. You may have heard me say any of the above on any given night on devfile 24/7 AlBashra. =)

I decided to bump this thread. Just recently I've found this problem becoming particularly prevelant. I was on Thors Bridgade today, and there were plenty of squads using VOIP, but I ended up going lone wolf because they were so annoying. Instead of yelling terse commands over VOIP now and then, the squad members would drone on for what felt like minutes practically whispering us instructions.

Besides the horrible effect it had on immersiveness of the game, it made communication inefficent to a point where I could play better without it. For one, because they were so quiet I always had to think for a few seconds to determine what I'd heard, and because they took so long to get a simple message across, there would be huge stretches when the sounds of battle would be blocked out, which can be really detrimental in certain situations.

So please, people, yell things like:

"Its clear! Attack power plant!"

Over voip, don't whisper things like:

"Well, okay guys, in my oppinion we have reason to believe all the enemies are clear from our path. I believe we should move out and attack. Thank you for joining my squad and thank you for following my orders. I wish you luck as you assault this base. Over and out."

Discuss, please.

I found two opposites behaviors: the squad named "Teamwork!!1" exteriorly but complete silence inside, the chatterer squad made of mixed accent where people talk too fast
the right condition is in the middle, some "voice contact", short sentences and orders.

puglous wrote:I might be alone here, but for some reason this annoys me to no end. That is, when you are playing in a squad with VOIP and people are talking like they're smoking pot, half asleep, or both. I'm aware that's a condition a lot of BF2 players may find themselves in, but I still wish people would be a bit more spirit during battle when using VOIP. It totally kills the mood when people are saying things like "*Yawn* Hey dude...uh...like, enemies to the West and *yawn* stuff...............[they finally release their finger on the VOIP key after about a minute]" while bullets are wizzing by my head.

Now, I don't go as far as role-playing in Project Reality (you know, screaming about Allah when you are the Insurgents or anything like that), but there's usually a sense of desperation in my tone. Even so, I wouldn't mind role-playing, as long as people didn't yell blood curdling screams into their mic every time they died.

I'd like to hear your oppinions, though. Is the way people speak on VOIP an issue for you, and if so, what kind of communication style do you like the most?
I just try to be audible without busting eardrums... that's enough for me...
