Tank gun's velocity

Post by Wonder »

Now, I realise the APFSDS rounds travel at four times the speed of sound as far as four kilometers, and that the tanks have no ballistic computers in BF2, but I have to say the current muzzle velocity doesn't fit the BF2 environment!

I want to be able to see the tank round in flight the same way I see it in a tank simulation. It feels stupid to just point and click to make whatever target is under the crosshair to disappear. You can easily take out maneuvering helicopters and even fast movers! That's not right!

In the BF world values such as speeds, distances and duration of battles have to be scaled to fit the environment and viewdistances. This too is realstic, but in a different way: If it takes about a second for the tank round to fly to the target at normal engagement ranges, which in the real world is about 2km, then it should take just as long in the BF2 world where the normal engagement ranges are about 500m or so.

if anything the tank shells are slow, i clearly know velocitys as i shoot high powered rifles, and for example, my remmington 700 in 7mm Magnum, flys at about 3100 feet per second, and i shoot it from the 700 yard line and it gets there near instantly. somtimes i agree that the shells fly a little fast, but its only when your on the receiveing end :P

Gonna reduce turret rotation speed, and barrel elevation and depression.

I agree with the shells in BF2 moving too slow. The abram firs slower then the T - 90 also.

I dont think IRL those Iraqi saw those APFSDS-T rounds hit them.

Damn that sucks. The only thing I never liked about PRMM was how damn slow the M1's turret traversed. The others tanks all seemed ok. Having to lift a mouse 5 times to turn a turret around is not fun. :(

As far as the velocity of the shells go I kind of agree with Wonder. An APFSDS round may be traveling close to 2 kilometers a second when it leaves the barrel but it doesn't maintain that same speed through flight. I don't have personal experience firing tank rounds but when I watch footage of an M1 firing I clearly see a red hot peice of DU flying through the air for good moment before it hits the target.

I have tried firing in PRMM as far as I could see but the round hits nearly instantly without dropping a single foot. My suggestion would be to just slow the tank rounds down enough that there is noticeable delay and drop when firing great distances in PRMM but not enough that the rounds appear to be lobbing. Also a nice thin redish orange projectile would look cool for the Sabot rounds the M1 fires. :D

is it true if your with in like 50 feet from the 120mm main gun when it fires the power of the blast and the caeing of sabo rounds can kill a man? i forgot where i heard it

Don't you dare touch the barrel elevation and depression! They should be kept real.

Don't reduce the turret traverse speeds. Reduce the traverse acceleration!

not sure if thats the correct distance but it is possible im sure. same thing happens with bombs, lots of victims in suicide attacks are killed by the concussion, it screws up your organs. a big gun firing a big round is no different.

Only if your infront of the front of the barrel (i dont mean infront directly but to side etc etc) Its possible. Behind the end of the turet and your just going to hear a big bang and feel the thud.

What i meant was its gonna take longer to do the rotations.. so instead of lifting your mouse 5 times it would be 10 times~

atm the tank rotation speed is awful! You have to drag your mouse across frantically to get hardly any response from the turret.

they dont move that slow in real life, but there has to be a reason that tanks dont shoot down halicopters in real life. can the tank canon shoot at such a high angle? i dond think it should be slower but harder to hit a healocopter some how

thats a good point i think, but then again i dont know too much about tanks and their turrets.

Tanks can shoot down helicopters in real life with HEAT rounds if they get as close to a tank as they do in BF2. Only thing is something like a Hellfire missile fired from the air has a longer range than a tank shell fired from the ground.

In RL I don't think you will see helicopters trying to hover over a flag pole for some reason while a guy in an extremely close enemy base is jumping into a tank to shoot it down.

maby the max angle that the gun can go to could be reduced to some what to be more better compable to the size of the map. like the rounds go slower becuse the maps are smaller to compensate and maby the tank angle could be less soo it just harder to a helie but possible? (not so shure of the idea my self just brainstorming?

To an extent yes. However if the realism compramises gameplay it will be left out we hope. At the moment if something comes behind you in a tank it takes you 5 minutes to rotate the turret to fire at them! :(

According to those videos on the link, the turret rotates 360 degrees in about 36 seconds. I think those are all challenger tanks so I assume the time will be different for all other tanks.
