Roads having advantages

Post by The_Blitzcraig »

Sorry if this was already suggested, What about having vehicles driving on roads lets them drive faster and have better steering. I dont think we need to increase top speeds on roads since it is fast enough imo but maybe just decrease the steering and top speed off road. I think that including this will make the game more tactical and realistic only adding to the fun of this amazing mod.

It's already hard enough to drive off-road with the huge hits of damage that vehicles take from bumps and dips in the terrain. Doesn't need to be fixed.

roads

Imo it is already like that. On anything but the flattest Kashan desert patches, driving full speed off-road will make your car explode quite soon (cfr the A-team).

So right now you can drive much faster on a road -until you hit that mine- then off the road. On maps like assault of Mestia, you can't even drive where yuo want to go without using the road. You just get stuck in a ditch. Quite realistic in fact to me.

I think I don't know Blitz, what you feel should "improve" in this matter. Do you mean the difference off-road vs on a road is too small then? For things like hummers.

You can press shift while driving light jeeps/heavy jeeps to go slightly faster.

Ya, I ment that the on road advantage isnt enough to make anyone want to use the roads vs taking the vehicle off-road to get somewhere faster. Im not suggesting that vehicles should take more damage off-road (since that is annoying enough) just saying that there should be more of a speed difference between the two.

Slightly? When I'm driving an insurgent car and I hit shift, it nearly starts to freakin' flie :p

Here is some info i pulled up on the Warrior IFV to use as an example of the big difference of on-road vs off-road.

"Vehicle Details
Crew: 3 + Dismounting Section of 7
Length: 6.34 m
Height to Turret top: 2.78 m
Width: 3.0 m
Combat Weight: 24500 kg
Engine: Rolls-Royce CV8 Diesel
Max Road Speed: 75 kph
Max Cross-Country Speed: 60 kph"

I see his point in that by making the off road travel slower it would mirror real life and make control over the roads and crossroads more important than it is now in PR.
Mestia is not a fair example but even there you can go crosscountry in a manner that you probably could not in real life.
I like the idea, not limited the cross ability so much as make it much much slower to drive off the road.
The little SF buggies and the MEC buggy should be almost as fast ....say 7/10 off road as on but a HMMV shuld be 5/10 and armor should be about 4/10.
And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.

Wouldn't tracked vehicles be better in rough terrain and sand than wheeled ones?

yeh i agree with this too, on maps like quai river with reletively falt fields everywhere it makes the engie kit useless apart from blocking access to the bridges.

I like the idea. As it is now you can go pretty damn fast on sand/mud/whatever and only risk taking some damage from the occasional bump.

On a note of interest, Quake Wars will allow different terrain types to have different properties such as road grip. I doubt this is possible to replicate in the BF2 engine, however - you will have to wait for the next generation games.

ArmA did this, whenever i'm online EVERYONE drives on the roads because of the speed advantage.

I'm sure a humvee or Land Rover would be able to drive off road, and that's it's probably hardcoded, unless they do something with the material type.

Notice the 35kph difference for the real life Warrior.
You posted a maximum speed and an average speed, which are incomparable.

Heres the max off road speed 60 kph, so actually the difference in speed is 15 kph or 10 mph.

Max road speed: 75 kph or 47 mph

Max off road speed: 60 kph or 37 mph

This could really make things interesting. The choke points on roads would be valuable now. Plus if you decide to traverse around a choke point you will be moving so slowly that you would be an easy target. Very nice idea
