Orientation and keys

Post by Sten-Battle »

Just a couple of questios:

1. Has anyone got any advice on how to keep track of what's happening and where(I Know: use the map)when you're in a squad--you know when enemies are being called out. I often get confused in the thick of things and as a result I'm not too much help. All tips appreciated

2. What keys do you lot use for basics? I use:

w,a,d,s for movement
q for sights
right click for prone and x for crouch.

It's not the ideal setup but I'm not sure how to change it. X is a particular pain in the hand.

Cheers

In 0.6 everyone gets a compass, which helps with orientation. Also use VOIP to comunitcate. If nothing else you can tell your squad that your pinned down behind a rock near the river fort or some such.

Your key set up seems strange, mind you, I just use the standard keys.
The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

Wow dude I must say thats some weird setup. I definitely suggest you use right click for sights/scope and left click to fire, middle click to reload.
I use arrow keys for movement and all the keys around them (CTLR, shift, kp_0, kp_1, kp_4, page up/down, del, ins etc) for various tasks.

Biggest thing would be to make mouse 2 the iron sights as it is paramount in PR that you quickly get your sights up. I also like having crouch as ctrl and prone as "c" I can quickly hit either much easier then the x or z keys. Plus ctrl can be held down with your pinky while still using all the other keys :D

Just launch PR and go to controls. There will be several tabs to choose from. Be sure to double check everything and then apply. Sometimes if a key is already in use it can be real pain in the a$$ to change things. You have to go the action that has the key you want to use and reassign it first. You can then go back to the action you want to change with the key you want to use and apply it.

If you like the key set up, go with it.
But the default key......L cap lok ......that button is your friend.
Click it often to see the whole battlefield and use it to zoom in tighter than the mini-map for throwing nades near blue dots.
And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.

I use:

left mouse = fire
right mouse = iron sights

w = forward
s = backwards
a = left strafe
d = right strafe

caps lock = sprint (i think this is squad screen normally so i changed that to - numpad..don't need this near your main set up)
shift = prone
ctrl = crouch

e = use (enter/exit vehicles)
q = voip
v = commander voip
r = reload
t = main com
y = 2nd com

i have used a setup like this for going on 10 years in gaming. Its 2nd nature.

Power to the mouse

Someone once told me to set the "push to talk" onto the middle mouse wheel button. It was a great suggestion and can highly recommend this setting change.

I use on my Mx518 the side button for TS but q for voip. I have used q for ingame chat for 9+ years so there is no use changing it now. "can't teach and old dog new tricks"

THe best thing is to go with what is most comfortable to you.

Hey man it sounds like your problems go deeper than your key setup. What you need is to make sure you have VIOP and just sit back and follow a good guy in your squad. Tell him you are new to this and hopefully he'll keep you alive...dont chat about stupid stuff though and cloud up the radio. Dont stand around in the open, limit the number of entraces that bullets can come at you (iE. put your back on a wall, stay close to the ridge etc) ...don't go sitting so you can see half the world around you...if you can see out, they can see in. Limit you field of attack. In the end just play for while and work on surviving and following someone elses lead and pretty soon you'll have enough experience to kick some tail. Oh and practice shooting at a stationary target (bush maybe)....so go from a run to prone and aim and fire. Try to get that down quickly as it'll improve your reaction time...also learn to shoot without the sites up, eventually you'll get a good feel for that and be a lot more comfortable in CQB. Practice helps...get on a server and spend a few minutes shooting at a hole in the wall or whatever.

I suggest making your middle mouse button to "3", your main weapon. This way you can quickly change firing modes and quickly change to your main weapon after throwing a grenade or something.
