if we get mortars how will they be deployed?

Post by SGT.JOKER »

i read the majority of posts about morters but i never really came across how they were gonna be deployed, will a certin class be able to place them like BFV or will it be a commander type asset?

I'd say it'll be a limited kit.

I used to love mortars in BFV, really under-utilised kit, but really useful if you put them next to a static ammo dump and used them to surpress a flag. Especially if you had a decent scout with binocs marking up a target for you.

I have some ideas for mortars that .. if they will work .. will make the mortars about as realistic as I can see a BF2 game getting them to be. Not sure if my ideas will work tho :p

They will likely be a CMDR asset, probably only operable by certain classes, and will need a fairly constant supply of ammunition. Not sure if the "mortar pit" will be a single mortar, or actually a small mortar battery of 2 or 3 mortars.

They will never be a direct fire weapon. They will require ranging and a spotter.

Still working on the details, the basic weapon is still in production because the way we want them to work requires some "mastery" in the way they are set up in game.

I wish to +1 them being a battery weapon.

Yeah, having them in a battery sounds good. They could replace the BF2 artillery system in-game and also become a commander asset.

Having them in a battery? What does that mean? :o And what's the difference with... not having them in there? :p

Egg, I like what you're saying there, I hope this can be done! 8)

If you could incorporate it with the bunkers and firebases, it could give mortars the advantage of unlimited (relatively speaking) ammo, whereas if you were to place it in any ol' spot you're gonna have to resupply after one or two barrages.

Maybe the howitzers again?

nah, ive asked 3 times about but i have so far to hear nothing about them.

then again i should "use the search function"

I really hope we get mortars, I know for sure that the Marine Corps never operates in combat without fire support and I would assume that would go for the other modern militarys represented in-game. It's unrealistic to not have artillery support on all but 2 maps but at the same time...the current lethality of artillery is VERY understated, IRL those artillery strikes would kill everything that wasn't dug in within AT LEAST a 100m radius. So with mortars we get the necessary fire support without the frustration of having you and your entire team wiped out by one barrage, which would fuck with the rhythm of the action.

Yeh mortars!!!

Currently in POE2 the mortars are great but i cant help feeling that its all a bit lonewolf spammy.

I really like how you are planning them as a requestable only by commander.
Making them useable by a certain kit is a great idea too, maybe we will see the rise of dedicated mortar squads made from ammo resupply / engy to redeploy and maybe a dedicated kit to operate along with a spotter/rangefinder.

Sounds excellent if you plan to make a mortar battery pit too, although i would prefer it if the mortars were resupplied by team mates rather than from an ammo dump, could get to the point where mortars are going off constantly.

I hope we get smoke cover shells too  thats a great asset to POE2 but the smoke in poe2 really needs an overhaul PR stylee ;)

From my limited knowledge on such matters, artillery (from mortars up to howitzers and beyond) are arranged in a group called a 'battery', just as individual soldiers are arranged into squads.

Typically though, a battery will be positioned towards the rear of, or even way behind the main battlefield area. This is mainly because artillery is a relatively 'soft' target - the weapons might be made of steel, but they are predominantly 'open' weapons, and require a moderate size crew to fire them effectively. As Arty is a specialised subject, not everyone will get arty training... and it's easier to kill the operators rather than destroy the weapons.

Artillery today isn't normally anywhere near the battlefield.

sounds good but, if we overdo things like:

- commander needs to plce tham,
- mortar squad needs to operate them,
- others need to request covering fire,
- commander needs to issue an order
- mortar squad needs to fire (in the meantime mortat squad is getting borred)

.. uff.. too much?
Who want to get things done will find a way and who dosen't will find an excuse.

True, but 80mm and 120mm mortars would be placed near the FOB of an engagement - like the uncappable / 1st set of spawn points or somesuch. The only reason BF2 + mods have the arty on the battlefield themselves is so the OPFOR can destroy them.

True off-table arty for fair gameplay would either have to be assigned for both teams, or would have to have a 10 minute 'reload' after each extended volley or something - because the OpFor wouldn't be able to deny them as an asset.

How often is artillery used in reality and what kind of 'barrage' are we talking about? Plus.. using artillery on any map wouldn't make sense, so should be some sort of "limitation" on it.
