Immersion Effect Idea

Post by EON_MagicMan »

I got this idea from Brothers In Arms, and I felt it was pretty effective in immersing the player, ALTHOUGH, I'm not so sure about the capabilities of doing this with the BF2 engine.

What if, when a bullet hit (only certain materials, like dirt or water), dirt/water (whatever's appropriate) splattered on the players screen for a second, and then faded away, and it would be the same sort of effect as when dirt gets splattered on a camera-- y'know, semi blurry and un-intrusive to the view. As long as it's not overdone, I think it would be pretty cool, and might even make a difference in how the player reacts, because sometimes the sounds of bullets cracking past and dirt flying up in front of you aren't enough, but I think dirt in the eyes would complete the ambience. Ditto with explosions and water splashes.

Likewise, it would be neat to have a bit of blood splashed on the screen (look at Brothers In Arms, they got this effect spot on, because overdoing it would be a pretty big mistake) as an indicator that you got it (although leave the direction indicator, because that has to be one of the most important things).

I've seen this effect in a few games my favorite being republic commando!! I think it's a great Idea but it would distract from the gameplay and what type of a performance hit would it cause on lower end systems?

Odd, I think anything that makes the view into a camera ruin immersion. I want it to appear as I'm looking through my eyes. And I dont think I will see dirt splattered on my eyes very good. I'll have my eyes closed instead.

I agree dawdler, though a good idea, it ruins the immersion for me..

We do need some way of makin suppresion more useful though.

I say spawn times over 30 seconds are just overkill. If you ever find yourself being basraped and let's face it, as long as there's a game with spawns it's going to happen, it is no fun at all. Spawn-dead-wait-spawn-dead-wait. Gets old.

agreed with above ^^

i got caught in the exact same situation, eventually i just gave up.

the immersion idea is sorta saying your POV is a camera, sorta saving private ryan style. I suppose you could do what BF2 SF, and have like black area for where your mask / glasses would be.

shellshock would be good also
