First things you do after joining a game?

It is funny when new maps load. If nobody makes a squad for 60 seconds or so I will almost always start one. Then instantly 5-6 ppl load in. Always good for a chuckle because they are bound and determined not to be squad leaders

What benefit are the commands? Outside of rendering the fps?

Well, first thing I do is spawn at the airport and request a pilot kit before anyone can blink. Then teamkill everyone going even remotely close to MY jet/chopper.

Rallys+officer kits=join
or if singing_meat is on, we'll go SFing or ambushing roads or something fun.

I check for rallies and the like, look for people who I know, or start a TW&VOIP squad or something that people can get the idea that this isn't a 1337 f5tr0pz squad. Also check for choppers/snipers and see if the team needs some support there, then Ill start a RECON or AIR squad.

Due to the earlier Mod edit, I don't feel able to post what I frequently do at the beginning of a round, when I've loaded up a new round and waiting for the timer to go down.

I'm sure there's a few people out there that have seen my funny side!

Thats basically what I do i really only need a squad thats tactical, has good rally points and that has VOIP. Its also always a bonus if all your squads work well together

Check the squads, see who's got rallies, what SLs have Officer kits, check if there is a Commander.
If there is a Commander I either join and infantry squad(Usually play as Medic) or set up an Engineer/Transport squad.
If there is no Commander then I take the position(I've played Commander so much lately, I think I've only played three games since Saturday without playing Commander).

3rd, I am very sorry if you end up having no mic but I wont allow you in my squad if its gonna be hard to communicate, though if you can type fast and all thats good

First I check the teams to see if I can switch the UK/US side simply because I like their weapons and optics better (especially on the Russian maps). Alternatively, I check if one team is winning handily and try to switch to that side. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind being on the losing side but if my team is being outclassed, it's no fun playing. I'm not good enough to turn the tide of the war. In fact, I find I have a quite high "beta" (for those of you familiar with the capital asset pricing model), i.e.

My performance = Base performance + Beta x (My team - Enemy team).

As I have a Beta greater than 1, my performance is boosted/magnified by my team's performance. If my team is great, I'll be among the top 10. If my team sucks, I'll suck even more and be among the bottom 5. I guess that's the sign of a volatile newbie player, but whatever. (Off topic: What's your Beta? If you're consistently good/bad regardless of your team's performance, you'll have a low Beta).

Back to the question, apart from the team switching covered above, I:
1. Check which squads have rally points
2. Check which squads are named TACTEAM, TACTICS, TEAMPLAY or ENG VOIP (definitely not the numerous GER VOIP that seem to be everywhere!)

3. Check which squads are grouped closely together
4. Join the squad that meets the criteria above.
5. Ask the squad leader which kit I should play. If given a choice, I go Rifleman Optics on the US/UK side alternatively try to get the SAW kit.
6. Join up with my squad and make sure we stay together.

That's it. Sorry for the long post. Fully agree with the NCO comments earlier, BTW, I find myself doing that quite a lot lately.
