Localising rank names
Would anyone be interested if the following changes took place?
"Commander" --> "Lieutenant"
"Squad Leader" --> "Sergeant"
Not too sure what should the actual ranks be for each of the factions, but would be much more fun to say, "Our rally is down, Sergeant!", than, "Our rally is down, Squad Leader!".

True. I guess it's more for fun/roleplay reasons than practical ones. Anyway, "Commander" and "Squad Leader" sounds vanilla-ish.

Re: Localising rank names
I don't like using real ranks ingame, ranks are earned IRL and using those ranks ingame seems disrespectful to servicemen/women imo.

I get called sarge if I lead a squad, I don't see the problem...
I've never served for real and I'm not proud of my squad leading skills.
"what's the plan, chief?"
I wanna hear from some of the ABA chaps, what kinda lingo they use...Is it always, "Sir" or "(insert rank here)"

Always puts a smile on my face

Warrant officer 2nd class (2nd highest non commisioned rank) and above are adressed as "sir." the only time you adress anyone by their proper rank beyond said ranks is if you share the same or outrank the person.

Cheif can refer to either Cheif warrant officer, the warrant officer incharge of a corp/squadron, or can also and more commonly refers to Cheif Petty Officer which is a Naval rankSgt.Smeg wrote:I get called sarge if I lead a squad, I don't see the problem...

Re: Localising rank names
actualy in ticket count which represents lives, the CO can be named Lieutenant Colonel.Jonny wrote:APP-6A - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Claims a battalion of around 300-1000 troops is led by a Lieutenant colonel, not a Lieutenant.
It also depends how long you live, if you live to have 300 lives under your command then Lieutenant is totally wrong, if you live to have less than 25 lives under your command you are not a Lieutenant.
So unless its done dynamically it wont work out right.

Re: Localising rank names
I'd feel like a bit of a tit going round calling people Sir etc. I would feel like I was pretending to be in the army rather than just playing a game, if you get what I'm trying to say... At the end of the day your all just people playing a video game, applying for a commander position does earn you the right to be called Field Marhsall whatever.
Not meant to be offensive to anyone who does do this, its just my personal opinion.

Re: Localising rank names
What if we simply replaced the CO's "star" icon to 1st Lt/Capt icon and SL's "circle" icon to sgt. icon with a number bellow/above? I guess this could be possible. Maybe even the grunts could have a stripe or 2 instead of that little dot next to their name. Just to make it feel a bit "different" than it's been till now.
IMO the way how ranks should work that Jonny described is too complicated. Who actually cares about such precision anyway?
