Binoculars - Measuring distance
Thought this must've been mentioned at least once but I couldn't find anything about this in the search function.
I always wondered, how do I use the binoculars to measure the distance to a location? This would be very good to know as a grenadier or for the sniper when he's not being squad leader.

I guess practise makes perfect! Im shitty at guessing them as well. But when you do it a lot youll learn it.

Re: Binoculars - Measuring distance
To measure distance, whether with a Sniper Scope or a Bino, you need to know the approximate size of the object.
You then measure how many "Units" the objects measures in your optics. This can be translated into a distance, although I don't have the exact specs right now.
Google things like MilDot and you should find info on that.
Btw, is it only me, or are the bino markings unreadable in 0.8?
EDIT: Found this: http://www.exen.info/

Re: Binoculars - Measuring distance
This is about how to find range with binoculars, not how to beg your SL or friend with SOFLAM to give you the range.
Other than that, I really don't know - I've always wondered myself.

Re: Binoculars - Measuring distance
It's an approximation of distance.
You can do it with or without binoculars, it just depends on how quickly your brain can figure it out (myself, with ADHD+ADD inherited, my brain takes a quick, sharp estimate based on size and relative area (say, you have a tree next to the guy about a half inch on your screen, while the tree near you is twice your character size. If you can properly associate distance, chances are that the distance is roughly 200m).
It all depends on how fast your brain can estimate the distance, simply by comparison of sizes. Hard to do, especially on a 2d monitor, but it can be done to the dot.

I think it depends on your resolution and graphics settings. I have everything on low, except geometry on medium, and 800x600 resolution, and the markings are unreadable for me.Salah ad Din wrote:Btw, is it only me, or are the bino markings unreadable in 0.8?

Awseome game! oh the memories (theres a great online mod version for HF2 btw, really cool)youm0nt wrote: GoldenEye for N64![]()
oh yea so.....
Range in BF2 is purely practice and guesswork imo, the engine just doesnt seem to have the level of detail to precisely measure the distance to your target, producing an accurate shot first time is usually a gamble with PR's weapon deviation and at best is pretty random,

go on every map and stand in every possible spot and measure the distance to every other possible spot

Re: Binoculars - Measuring distance
Hm... all right. Let's say the tank is between the numbers/units 1 and 3 when on a 200m distance. Then all you need to know is how big the tank is (let's say 7m long). Then for example all objects/vehicles that are 7m long and between unit 1 and 3 are 200m away.

Re: Binoculars - Measuring distance
Atleast it seems for me that when im looking 1Meter high obstacle from 250Meters the target is 1 bar high when looking trough the binos.
Meaning 250-500 distances should be quite easy to determine with binos.

Re: Binoculars - Measuring distance
I always measure the distance with the map.Only thing you got to know is how big one square in a map is.Or if you're the SL, just use the attack or move marker...but when it comes to binoculars,i dont know
