M-14 DMR variant

Post by Zealot1011 »

Searched: M14, M-14, DMR, Marksman

Both a question and a suggestion:

The first time I ever saw this weapon was playing Insurgency, and I'm a little curious now. Does the US more commonly use the wooden-stock M-14 or the DMR as their marksman rifle?

If it is the DMR, are there any plans of replacing the current M-14 with this (IMO) much sexier rifle? It would be nice to see the newer variant in-game, though I know the Dev's probably have more important things to look at than creating new models. :D

woot woot ???

Wooden M14 not sexy ???

If i give you black paint , plastic rails and a glue gun , would you be happy

Seriously , The stock dont make the kill , in iraq/afganistan , a lot of those vietnam veterans were put back in service because THEY ARE GOOD AT "sniping"

-High caliber
-Heavy bore
-long cannon
-time proven action

Ok, two things I guess I should clarify:

1. By WOOD stock, I simply meant the straight-back hunting-rifle kind of stock, as found on bolt action rifles, the M1, the Springfield, the K98, etc etc, as opposed to a pistol grip, as found on the DMR, M-16, pretty much every assault rifle in existence, etc etc.

2. Howitzer, it's not about looks, it's simply about being true to the army. I'm simply suggesting that if the DMR is more commonly used, that it should be reflected in PR. I'm not begging and whining at the Dev's for it, it's just a suggestion. Like I said, I know they have better things to do with their time.

Besides, half your argument is not valid. It's the SAME GUN except for some changes to the receiver.

same "High caliber" (large caliber)
"Heavy bore" (large bore, which is kinda redundant w/ large caliber)
"long cannon" (what the hell does that even mean?)
"time proven action" (I'll give you that one)

That would be the marines M21.

you are right....but The M21 Sniper Weapon System (SWS) is the semi-automatic sniper rifle adaptation of the popular M14 rifle.
kinda like comparing red apples to green apples you know.

"That would be the marines M21."

*bzzt*

M21 is nothing more than a honed M-14. The current M14 in-game is most likely an M-21.

But! It may play a different role than the one in PR currently. How would it change gameplay? How is it worth the DEVs time to remodel, UV map, Skin and animate it in?

Also, this as is the suggestion area,
Ask yourself the following questions:

1. Is it worth it?

The mod team has limited means and can only set out for so many ends. While adding the ultra-elite counter terrorist Vatican Swiss Guards as a new faction would be cool, ultimately it would require an awful lot of time and add little to our mod.

2. Has it already been suggested?

In over a year of development, we've had quite a lot of suggestions made, many of which didn't pan out but are still re-incarnated monthly by new forum-goers. While we appreciate the ethusiasm, we'd also like you to get to know the long and glorious history of the Suggestions forum.

SEE BELOW THIS POST TO VIEW THE ALREADY SUGGESTED SUGGESTIONS!

3. Is it already in-game?

Sometimes completely new members who have yet to play the game will suggest something which has obviously already been done. Other times a less apparent feature, like bullet drop (every bullet drops, folks) will be requested. Its always good to double-check that claymores haven't been removed from the game completely before suggesting we give them to the engineer class.

4. Does it fit with the Main Aim of the Project Reality mod?

Please remember that our main pronciple aim is to promote teamwork, make the BF2 engine into a realistic yet fun tri-service battleground, and introduce British Forces. We have added to this list as 'secondary aims', like adding Insurgents etc, but please do NOT bother suggesting a complete re-design or any kind of special forces only mod, as it will no doubt be met with a brick wall from Devs.

All excellent points, Teek. I agree with you, and as I stated earlier, I know the Dev's have more important things to think about. Still, the suggestion itself can't hurt.

This already has been suggested; military designations/type-classifications don't always work well in the search engine since they do not have very many characters. :)
Zealot1011 wrote:Here's a pic of the DMR
The USMC M14 DMR assembled by the Precision Weapons Section will probably be completely phased out in the near future by the Mk-11 and M39 Enhanced Marksman Rifle, depending on the units. Though quite accurate, it is very maintenance intensive. M14 DMR already seems to be relegated to Security Forces (including FAST), Marine Security Guard detachments (at US embassies) and Military Police SRT designated marksmen. I have heard of them and seen photos of them in use by Navy and Marine EOD units, Navy VBSS teams and shore installation security forces (Masters at Arms).

At the squad level the Marines have three types of M16 based DMR floating around. West coast units have/had plain M16A4s with bipods and ACOGs. East coast units have/had the SAM-R, which features a more powerful, variable magnification optic and match barrels with floating rails. And Mk-12 rifles have been coming into service for the line rifle companies for about a year, so the status of the previous two weapons I am unsure of.

In short, no, the PWS M14 DMR will not be making it to PR, and the USMC faction in PR will most likely be getting the Mk-12 for its designated marksman weapon in future versions.

Locking for re-suggestion. :)
