There are a lot of guides on how to play when you have got the sniper kit, but most of the times that is not the problem on the pub-servers.
Far more important is how the people behave who want to play as a sniper and what mindset they have got.
So here are a few thoughts of mine on the role of the sniper.

1.Pls Rookies. Please practice shooting on training servers first.
Not only because of the 8second settling time, but also because you have to
concider bulletdrop and bullettime.

2.Open a SniperSquad with 3 other poeple. 2 Snipers and 2 Spotters(Medics)
Dont lock your SQ after the second person joint and dont attach the sniper to a random sq. I even saw a SQLeader beeing Sniper today. He blocked both Sniper kits the hole round dying every 10min and he didnt make a single kill. His SQ left the server one by one due to him not beeing able to set rallies.

3. Killing stuff. Thats not what you are supposed to do. If you see an Officer, Spezial Kit or an enemy shooting take em out, but leave the ohters alone. Your Mission is to gather intel. If you dont have a commander to report it to you can still use teamchat.

4.Communication. Without a mic you will be a useless Sniper or Spotter, there is no other role (besides vehicles) were you work so close with your partner. Best is if you do it with a mate over TS or Vent.

5.Spotters are just as fun to play as the Sniper himself. You are the one taking the lead and clearing the way for the Sniper. Also you are the one choosing the target and shooting position. With a good Sniper it is fun to play, because its almost like taking out people with the binoculars.

6.If you didnt get the Sniper dont take the Marksmankit. The Marksman is for the SQs. I had the following conversation about a million times (3 times just today):

ME:Why did you take the Marksman Kit?
Player X: For Snipping
Me: The Marksman Kit is for the SQs. You wont hit anything and you dont have a Laserpointer or MedPack.
Player x:Im a pretty good shot.
ME:No seriously go and support a SQ
Player x: Ill hit en...... (Player was kicked from the Sniper SQ)

I know some of these things have been said many times before and there are snipers in CQB nearly every round, but if just one "wanna be sniper" reads this and becomes a proper Scout Sniper its worth discussing it again.

Well that covers the subject every well... :-D I wish that Inf squad SLs shouldn't always start every round saying "No sniper kits", because people don't understand that sniper rifles are no good in basic infantry combat.

I agree with your whole post. But this exact quote is also a problem in the reverse sense.

I'm sick and tired of player's joining my squad and grabbing the sniper kit and then moving with us, saying "Don't worry, I'm good with the sniper". Your a huge disadvantage because you can't hit anything when ambushed due to the long steadying time, not to mention the scope is meant for long range.

I usually immediately ask that player to pick up the kit he swapped for the sniper. If they missed their chance to swap back (kit disappeared), then I ask them to refrain from doing it again and let it slide ONCE. If they refuse, I kick them...plain and simple (they are no use to my squad)

THERE IS A REASON WE HAVE THE MARKSMAN KIT.

The Marksman kit gives all the long range support an infantry squad needs, without wasting the valuable sniper it.

If someone comes into my squad and selects a sniper kit they get kicked, no warning thats it your out.

Snipers are absolutely useless in frontline infantry combat and thats pretty much always where my squads are deployed.

You are right when you say that the problem is the mindset of some players, the snipers primary role is recon and target identification, scouting ahead of the main force. The secondary role is to kill the enemy.

I forgot something. But it is a lot more controverse and difficult.
Distraction. You can take out a driver, machine gunner or random Squad Member to make the enemy come looking for you. Important are 2 things:
1. It has got to be worth it. Unless you distract a hole SQ, vehicle or FB buildup you should stay hidden.
2.Escape. Your aim is to make them come looking for you, therefore BE PREPARED. Have a quick exit route keep your distance and know a place or two to hide.

I think the best thing a sniper can do is to take out a crewman when he exits a vehicle to listen or hide the engine noise. Then you get onemanned tank/apc in the field. Good intel on it and BAM, it's gone.

If I'm Squadleading then I'll start off by saying no sniper kits as my squads are usually infantry in the assault/build role. If someone gets a sniper kit i tell them to get rid of it and make sure they cover it till the kit goes away or kick them.

What pisses me off more is players who join squads to get the sniper kit and then leave create their own squad and lock it.

Yeah seriously. A sniper is not just for intelligence, anyone can be intelligence with a pair of binoculars, and they won't be wasting a great rifle for taking out plenty of targets. I have helped my team fight off plenty of insurgents with just my m40A3 and my spotter. We told them where they were coming from, but we didn't hesitate to shoot either.

actually 2+2=4

anyway :p

nice post im sure it will be very helpful to newbs and existing older newbs....

If played properly a Sniper SQ is all but useless.
Some examples on how powerful one Sniperteam can be:

FB: If a Sniper shoots someone who was building a firebase all the others will run for cover too and stop building (done by me and my mate aprox every 2nd round)

AA: A Sniper can control an AA making an area accesable by air. (Done by us every round in Muttrah city)
Next time your chopper gets down because of a lack of proper snipers think about me.

Lasertargets: A snipers main concern in Kashan Desert. SQLeaders just dont do it.

Enemy Snipers and Marksman etc: Every round we stumble in to a few situations were we save a SQ from long range fire or kill an AT soldier before he can take his shot. Shooting APC drivers while they search for a target with their binocs is also very entertaining.

Flags:This happens nearly every round. The enemy tries to capture a flag. Someone gets shot by me or my mate and everybody runs for cover instead of capping or running of to the next flag. Most of the time we can hold them of till reenforcement arrive.


And I bet a Sniper helped you a few times as well you just didnt notice.

meh, perhaps you are that good, the thing is, most snipers i see are running off somewhere and either get killed because they are WAY to close to the action, get into obvious sniping positions (seriously, on the crane in muttrah, how much more obvious can you get), fire so often from the same position that they can be pinpointed by anyone with surround sound or when they do finally move, do so in the most obvious manner.

I have been sniper quite a few times, usually not because i request the kit, but because I either find an idiot sniper on the other team and grab his kit (especially on insurgent maps this is fun) or i find a dead sniper of our team lying in the middle of the street and decide to grab his kit before the enemy does.

my point? most snipers cant find their *** with both their hands tied behind their back, and are usually more of a burden on a team than they are a help. a good sniper however can be extremly useful

I was sniping with Tahanatos on mutrah and snipers are anything but useless, I was spotting for some guy in the squad and we took out enemy h-ats and snipers, as well as sls and stoped them from using a supply crate completely.

If you just go lone wolf they suck but if your in the right squad they work really well.

Snipers are anything but useful in 0.8.

Last night I was sniping alone, as the lonewolf I am, and happened to come across both snipers from the enemy team. They were crouched behind mountains on muttrah and I waited a good 10 minutes probably for them to make the mistake and come out. HEADSHOT! One of the snipers down. And I see the other sniper noticing his partner got hit, so he runs towards him and I was like what the fuck is he going to do about that? Then he pops up, and I take him down aswell. Then all of a sudden the both of them are alive. Mmmm great, they've got a medic... This goes on for about 10 minutes and I "kill" them a couple of times.
Eventually they called in airsupport on me.

This was just one of many examples.

In 0.7 you could take out the officer and the whole squad was immobilized.
Now, you gotta take out the WHOLE squad since there's always ONE medic.
No matter how hard you try, even if you get the officer AND medic, someone's still gonna pick up that kit and revive them all since YOU gotta wait 8 FRICKIN SECONDS just to wound a guy.

Creds to the GLTD though. It's ALWAYS useful :)


OFFTOPIC: Choppers should be immune to the own teams gunfire. Now it's the second time I get shot down by a humvee in the main base.
