don't have the time to read through all of the replies so this may have been discussed already, but anyway
OkitaMakoto wrote: 3b. PR spawn points I will need suggestions because of the different spawn (RP) system. I will be looking at how .6's RP/SP works. Since in .5 you cannot place an RP within 75m of a point, I dont know how I can put a spawn point to kind of force the 4 control points. I want the Rangers (USMC) to have to defend the Target areas four corners, (easy to do in vBF2) but in PR it gets tough, since you can spawn only at the Home base and RP's. Getting that to work will be tricky. I need ideas on this one.
Maybe do it like this.
4 control points (=flags), 1 on each corner
enough area for USMC to set up rally points kind of "inside" the 4 corners, if you know what I mean.
like

a---------d
. . . . .. .
RP's . . ..
HERE. . ..
b---------c
(a,b,c and d being the control points)
Losing any of the 4 control points will cause a heavy ticket bleed.
place 2 rallypoints on each control point
AASv2 set so that the insurgents can cap any of the 4 control points.

This way the USMC would have to defend all of the control points, and they would have spawns at the control points (the 2 rallypoints) and then a backup rally point (if the SL has set one) inside the defended area. So they can spawn there if their control point gets overrun or the RP's are destroyed.

Tom the map maker demands sleep! :)
its 3:10am... and I've just been reading he forums.. and this past week I've played Coop AlBasrah with a friend nonstop... so maybe expect updates in a week...?

But really, thanks, I'm glad you're wanting updates. Let's me know you (at least one of you) are interested.

Ive been thinking of some ways to keep the fighting in certain areas and ways to avoid intense amounts of buildings...possible thoughts are...

1. adding in a lake that doesnt exist (off to the side, nothing major, not in main gameplay area, problem is, it would no longer be Mogadishu, you know?) I'm just worried that itll get too laggy or repettitive.. we'll see as I start to lay it out

2. some sort of open courtyard, mosque area, anything to throw in that would keep it from all being a dirty city with a million buildings...

3. help?

Still, the static little birds and BH's are not loading on each restart... but the spawned ones are... hmmm...
(just for you Desertfox, im staying up some more to make abit of progress) :)

5:10 AM update for DesertFox:
+I have started work on the rest of the city. There will be a mosque, or two. (not controlpoints though)
+The first crash site is making progress.
+I have changed the Checkpoint into the city. It will start as US controlled. Due to AAS, this point will be the last point that can be taken by the Insurgents(Airbase will be uncappable). There are a few tents and a radio tower, and it is surrounded by a dirt wall(entrenched, i guess, is the term?). It's a forward post in addition to a checkpoint for the Airport.
+There will be a road looking like...this:
Image
Image
that goes from the Airport to the checkpoint and into the city (ala Hawlwadig Road)
+Ummm... last update... The basketball hoop and tables outside the hanger are still in as of this update.

-Still asking if its possible to add in music to be played at the Airport.. anyone know?

Great, thanks for replies.

I'll get on the rocky coast.

I'll look for the better hotel. Are you talking about the one that was the first MEC control point on Karkand? With the stairs up to the little area with the flag?

What I still want to know: is it even POSSIBLE to play music from a static area in BF2? (for use at US Airbase just as a fun pump up for the "Rangers")

Just so no one comments on this again:
It's not going to be exact, the same buildings, the same type of sand, same army... blah blah.. its a map, its my first. Im trying my best to make it as close to Mogadishu as I can from looking at pictures, reading, and satellite photos and soldiers photos and what BF2 and PR provides building wise... any links to info would be appreciated, even better if you were actually there :) ... but... just so you all know...
: )
maybe i'll work some tonight, probably after im done eating right now... : )

So, kind of major updates, three pics, and I *think* i got music put in. Jimi Hendirix's "Voodoo Child."

Fearosius, could you post a pic of the hotel you are talking about? I'm a bit lost, havent played Karkand in ages...

***edit*** keep in mind, in the editor, many statics have a short draw distance. It's actually not *this* blank on the actual map, but of course, more will be added... just dont think this is all that I have placed...

pic 1: here is durants crash site. and you can also see tires burning and over to the hotel and target building. the city still needs flushing out, but its rolling.
Image

pic 2: Target building and Olympic (until fearosius shows me what he thinks, then we'll see, but thats easy to change...) ummm.. yeah.
Image

pic 3: This is the beginning of my work on the insurgent spawn and bakara market area. insurgent sawn is off in the distance, the pic explains it well enough, im pretty sure.. just really the main street for the insurgents... ill get on the market like-ness later.
Image

Happy with the update DesertFox? I want to make it better suited for street fighting, adding more walls, areas for cover, cars, etc. The insurgent main street is a bit wide IMO, so I'll get on that.
Let me know what you all think, except one of you. I'll get on it more tomorrow.

For the target building you should do what snake docter which is

Image

(The big building ;) )

Also if you want all the objects so show within say...500M of where you are in the editor at the bottom you should see 3 boxes make it so its

Renderer Minculldistance 500

Edit the number to change how far ;)

Hmm, i like the target building (ill try to put it in, however, that byuilding looks REALLY big... and where do i find it? whats it under in the object/statics folder...? we'll see), but i think the Hotel you guys suggested might be a bit short... I really wanted it to stand out... we'll see. Ive got a lot of work to do :) and Im sure many things will change...

DesertFox, thanks for those options to change... its annoying having my fences and stuff disappear so quickly...

The third BH was hit by a RPG but maintained the hover to unload all the troops and made it back to the hanger.

Small typed update

No pics due to my being on a 56k connection. And photobucket HATES 56k connections...as do I.

Moving on. I have made the road that will lead from the airport to the city. I have also made a small lake just north of the airport with 4 buildings and a few wrecked cars. Just simulating a small village on the outskirts of the town. Like I said. This is not going to be 100% accurate to the smallest detail of city layout, but it will be as close as possible with care taken to avoid lag and stuff that people hate in video games.

I am working on undergrowth, but still cant get it to where I can see it. Maybe I'll look for a good tutorial. I have it placed, and in undergrowth view, it shows blue where I have placed it... but still, cant actually see it in render mode (even though it is checked to be rendered)

The city hasnt made much progress. It still seems to be lacking something, so I am going to load up Al Basrah and take some screenshots of the city (mainly textures, trash on the ground, walls, etc) just to get a better idea of what else to put in detail-wise that will make it more lived-in.

I have added the control points. Each has a radius of about 50-70 meters. That may change, we'll see. Added the insurgent spawn, Bakara Market, Durant's Crash Site, Wolcott's Crash Site (just the point, no BH or models there yet), the Target Building, the US Checkpoint, and the Airport.

Shaping up nicely. There will be some unavoidable open desert, but I am looking into ways to avoid them, or to make it not so noticable (like adding in the Lake, which looks quite nice, actually...)

So, To anyone who is following or just bored, there you go. When I get a faster connection (ie. dad's house) I will upload some pics. Hopefully, I will have made even more progress.

One thing I am wondering about is when I add in the skins the guys will use. I have the Ranger-esque camo skins from (sorry, I forgot who gave me them, youre on this site though..sorry!) and I am unsure as to when I put that information in. I am thinking this is much farther down the line, so it is not too important.

Anything anybody wants me to consider, let me know.

the satellite photos I saw showed that the sealine was not that rocky, whoever said it was, could you post back your knowledge, please? If you know more than me, which is unbelievably possible, post back and let me know where you learned this and I will gladly put it in.
:)
Thanks all,
Okita

bonus-not-important-news:
I bought the recently re-released Black Hawk Down Extended Cut, havent watched it yet, but the new footage should be fun, even if its only 8 minutes... NO, I am not using it as research! :) just for fun, and maybe some inspiration.

Also, I bought "When Trumpets Fade" (Hamburger Hill 2, in a sense) It stars the guy who played Mike Durant in BHD, I thought that was kinda cool. Its a good movie too. WWII, Hurtgen(sp?) Forest, just before the Battle of the Bulge.

haha. thanks.
It still needs a lot of work, but it's on its way.
For a first map, it has definitely been a learning experience.
Haven't done much since the last update, the road is more or less done...
I'm thinking about getting what I have now finished so I can load it up on my own server so I can see it all from a chopper and Humvee...
We'll see.

Thanks for all the support,
Okita
