Thanks guys now I know what you're talking about  I don't know exactly how it looked like but I'll definitely try to find out.

I'm choosing a different sky right now to make it feel unique. Was thinking about a night map with lots of static lights in the town but I'm not sure about the performance and the insurgents would be at huge disadvantage since they don't get NV.

You could go for a dawn map, that would be great :)

This is how Basrah used to look like in 0.4. I'm seriously interested in this kind of sky. It gives the map a cold feeling and it would also work well with the US Army ACU. The only problem is that I can't manually set the lightning exactly as it is in the screenshot so if anyone still has 0.4 somewhere I could really use the sky.con from 0.4 Basrah ;)

that screen has been photoshopped quite abit.

really a urban night map would go down really well, and you could easily give insurgants the advantage of how much of the map they control, and still have street lights etc.

the problem is, it would be really hard to do well espically for a beginner and look gd etc.

What about the performance? Night map with lets say 2500-3000 statics. And there is also the balance issue because I really don't want the Muttrah city v1 type of balance where the USMC could only win if the whole MEC team was drunk and high at the same time. It sure sounds cool but I would rather stick to the day type of map with an interesting sky/lightning.

night shaders are harder on performance but you dont need as much view distance for a night map. Balance issues are upto the mapper on a asymmetrical map, muttrah 1 was balanaced just fine in v0.3 when it was first released, any one who played it can tell you the same, its just sooo many things changed in v0.4 and v0.5 that made the map soo unbalanced as the mod simply outgrew the map.

as for the Op Comp sky, looks like FR sky.

It took me quite some time to set the lightning.
Basrah 0.4 sky texture:

Sharqi Peninsula sky texture:

These are dusk type of skies. Sun is in the west and has the appropriate sun flare. I didn't use the already made sky.con and the lightning is set from scratch. Hope it looks better than before.

I've painted the ground textures and undergrowth.

I'm not going to post the minimap just yet since I'm still working on the rest of the map.

Here are a few screen shots to show off the rest of the town and overall feel.

And since Iraq isn't just all about the desert I've decided to add some grass

Hard to say at the moment. The toughest part is done tho

I guess I can make it ready for next release but it's not up to me whether you'll be able to play it or not but I'll do my best ;)

Looking good jay,

one thing i will say which is directed at all mappers and not just you,
aren't these areas/maps supposed to be "war torn"???

and what i mean by that is, all maps seem to look like the fight just started
(at the beginning of that particular round)

would be a welcome change to have some maps look "war torn" to some degree,
rather than just the odd wrecked vehicle.

SUGGESTIONS:

areas with burnt out and damaged buildings with black textures as if fire has damaged the buildings.

buildings on fire, wall of flames, cars on fire near burning buildings.

street areas/buildings (ie 20m area) covered in black from (example) bombshells.

large craters in roads (example) could maybe use the same effect as when a runway is damaged.

(more) rubble incorporated into the above suggestions (ie same rubble as when a destructible building is destroyed.

please don't take me the wrong way guys, i'm not having a go or passing judgment on anyone's maps,
just offering suggestions because of observations i've made.

i know there's plenty of people to give suggestions and not many willing to help directly,
i'm starting to learn 3DS max and hopefully i'll be able to contribute in the future.

but anyway, keep up the good work jay/everyone ;)

I understand what Ablack means and I know from talking to him about this before that POE2 has managed to inject that 'dirty war torn feel' into a number of there maps. Although to be perfectly honest with you I'm not sure how or what it is that completes it. Anyway here are some good examples Red Dawn and Pripyat is also anyway I hope that helps explain a little.

Ps I'm sorry for the POE2 links but they they do show what we mean and we all know PR is the best realism mod. :P
