How about changing MEC to Russia and having the return of the communists. Russia and China raid all their neighbouring Middle Eastern countries for oil and crush every one of them, then after repeated warnings by US and UK they fail to cease fire, so a war breaks out. This solves the problem of having Russia fighting in Karkand, but it also means we'd have to have some Russian theatres of war.

You can do more with a fictional country than a real one. Look how they are limited with the weapon selection for China while trying to keep it realistic. WIth the MEC, you can find any weapon used by Middle Eastern countries and pretty much apply it to them.
