Who cares about recoil or magazine size when a single round can do some much? G3 rounds all the way

Accuracy and controllability are far more valuable than sheer stopping power. In PR, where your average engagement range grows with each patch, the need for a reasonably sized caliber of bullet grows as well. Handcannons and baby antiaircraft guns are all well and good in vanilla, but when push comes to shove, 556 is the most useful round. (Especially if all you're supposed to do is suppress your enemy, which the devs are trying hard to ram down our throats as the best tactic in all situations)

as a result, I prefer the M16, it conserves ammo whilst conserving accuracy.
Conserves ammo??? dude you have 8 magazines and something called supply crates. The most I've ever went down to on an m16 was 4 mags.

To me it all depends on the mission at hand. If you're dealing with potential collateral damage to civilians or property, the smaller 5.56 round is more likely to stop inside of the target than to pass through. Additionally, the 5.56 is a bit more accurate and controllable, although the smaller mass of the round still limits its effectiveness at range.
On the other hand, if you really need to put someone down and make them stay down, higher caliber is the way to go.
Oh wait, we're talking about in game, aren't we... whoops.

We are. And a 5.56 FMJ is very likely to go through a body

The most important caliber is your brain.... bigger caliber = better results.
Otherwise voted 7.62x51/7.62x54 mm for PKM in game. This caliber also gives you a bigger e-penis!

Is there any major difference between the 5.8 and all the 5.56 and the 5.45?

i'm torn.
7.62x51 is so much fun at range but i can't stand it up close with the recoil and small mag.
5.56 and
5.45 are great up close but they lack some punch at range really dislike watching wounded enemies run away.
7.62x39 is a nice compromise with more punch and 30 rounds, but the damage drop-off at range is obviously below all the above calibers, so i guess it's best used at medium ranges.
i just use them all, and end up forcing the rifles outside their comfort zone anyway

If I need to be mobile, I'll take a 5.45x39mm (except for AKS-74U), but otherwise I will try to take an ironsighted Dragunov SVDM. So pretty and it's a one shot drop 50% of the time for me. I will use an AK-47 or AKS-47, but only on semi-auto, as the recoil makes it impossible for me to get bursts that kill.

Not quite as likely as a 7.62, especially if it hits hard tissue like bone or cartilage. Although I guess it's a moot point since the game doesn't simulate bullet physics to that extent.
To be honest in game I just point and shoot, regardless of what caliber I have. It seems to me that optics are more important than the caliber in terms of success. Iron sights being faster to aim with and therefore better for CQB, with Magnified scopes better at distance but slower to aim with.

5.56 = more rounds + less recoil
with that caliber you get more chances to get the hit registered instead of dust shots - and in cqb you don?t shoot the roof when you go in full auto.
the 7.62 is quite nice, when you are camping somewhere and can take your time to aim, so i prefer the 5.56
