Well, actually, no. Removal of the minimap does not mean the normal map (key M) dissappears, since that will still be there. If an enemy is spotted, you can check that map to see where it is.

I don't get one thing.
Situational Awarness!?
What is that?
You can hear where the gunfights are coming from.
If you stick together you won't get lost.
Do you think a soldier in a combat zone knows every hiding place in the "map"?!
Do you know how much better PR will feel when you don't know where you are?!

I encourage people from both sides of this debate to read my suggestion of a compromise on this issue
HERE
Also it would be VERY MUCH appreciated that you read through my whole suggestion thoroughly before making a statement thank you.

Ok, so what about pilots? No minimap and you don't know where the friendlies are. That can only lead to disaster.
Guys, BF2 was built around the minimap idea. Think of a valid replacement before throwing the idea out.
What about navigating unfamiliar roads and the like?
Its just not a good idea to remove the minimap. The BF2 engine can't simulate "reality" and has to make compromises. One of these necessary compromises is the minimap, whether you like it or not.
What we can do, is remove the magical "spotting" of enemy troops.

Who said anything about removing it for pilots?

I have, well atleast I've tried.
What about navigating unfamiliar roads and the like?
Do what you do in real life, either get a guy to read the map for you, or stop the vehicle and read the map yourself, besides, I would imagine a person who would actually manage to get lost on maps so small as the size of bf2 maps is hardly competent to even play vanilla bf2.

Neither can any other game, yet there are plenty of games which do not feature a minimap fuction and they work perfectly fine.
What we can do, is remove the magical "spotting" of enemy troops.
That's hardly the main reason people want it gone, partly yes, but far from the main reason, atleast in my oppinion.

Guerra, you're smacking down pro-mini-map arguments left and right. It's almost as if you've been doing it for months!

Hell, you know what, nobody is doing anything about this, I'm starting to seriously consider editing the HUD myself.
I have Photoshop Elements, can anybody point my in the right direction on where to start? What tools do I need? I've tried looking at the bf2 editor forums but the site looks down.

I've seen your idea, Norte. Its interesting, but still too large and cumbersome. Try making it a compass a la ArmA or perhaps like the one in Oblivion. Small and discrete. Its not a big round thing, but rather a long horizontal bar, or rather a series of smaller vertical bars.
About the roads, many of the maps are very counterintuitive and do not have naturally flowing roads. Ever play that level with the dam? Yeah. So easy to get lost there with how many dead ends there are.
Theres just way too many maps like that.
Games that don't have the minimap were designed from the ground up not to have it. Also, most FPS games are in small linear corridors, BF2 is rather large, with a large amount of players in often very similar looking uniforms.
As soon as the minimap goes, the game will devolve into a TK fest, with confused players, confused pilots, and a whole lot of friendly fire.
A small PC screen can not even get close to the situational awareness of reality and the minimap is the compromise. Yes, its unsightly. Yes, it can get in the way. Yes, its not realistic. But its a necessary evil.

I think that we should keep the minimap, because it replaces the radio in real life (not sure of my statement there). Sure in RL, you dont constantly say were you are to everybody in the battlefield. So maybe if:
We could add a delay on the troop movement on the minimap
And make it so the minimap has an ''effect radius'', like the UAV in bf2, but only for detecting friendlys
Of course, the squadmembers, large vehicules (tanks, apcs, planes and heloes) and the commander are always visible.
Those are my idea

I'd say that this issue has been decided by being undecided (106 - Remove /106 - Don't remove). Closed.
