You export the .max file via a plugin in 3dsmax to the BF2 editor where you import it into your mod.

importing = take the con files and put them in max
exporting = visa versa (opposite of importing)

Yep, except there's a lot of setup stuff regarding hierachies and lods before a proper export can be made.
