Make it as big as possible, we can always resize the texture afterwards :)

Some progress:

The sheet:

Problem is my interior. I made the interior's UV's low resolution and just put it on the 3rd person model's sheet:

Image

The 1st person model interior is way different from the 3rd person one. So the UV's are going to be really different as well. What I see in BFmeshview however is that the separate 1P interior textures are being used for the 3rd person interior. How to do this? Only way I can think of is detaching the 3rd person interior but that would look shit. :? :

Also, should I put the seats on this UV sheet or a separate one?

The basic idea is that the 1P model is a lot more detailed. Both in model and texture. Hence we separate the mesh of the interior and give it a higher resolution texture.

The 3P mesh is supposed to have a lower quality 1P interior as nobody will see it in such close angles. It's texture should be on the normal 3P texture ideally. Some vehicles however use the 1P interior in the 3P mesh, and just use the 1P texture (often simply downscaled in resolution). This is far from ideal and sort of loses the point really of separating them in the first place.

Also, if I understand your last question correctly, any mesh can support multiple materials. Meaning the 3P model can use as many textures as it wants. It isn't limited to one set.

Thanks for explaining!

So actually, the way my UVW map is setup now with the 3rd person model having the interior and exterior on 1 UV sheet is good. That is nice. :D

One question remaining:

The Canvas top has it's own separate UV sheet + texuture. Should I put the cargo bay seats on this sheet or on the main 3p model sheet?

Preferably on the 3P sheet. Given that the players asses will be on the seats I don't think they need to be extra detailed for 1P. The less materials a mesh uses the better In this case the ideal situation IMO would end up being:

1P: 1P interior sheet of cabin + 3P sheet(for the back)
3P: 3P sheet (+ canvas for logistic variant).

Hi,

Actually I think the rear part of the truck will be low res on the 3P model and high res on the 1P model. Since the truck's back is actually more detailed and modelled different on the 1P model.

I will put the seats and the frame on the 3P model's texture sheet though, I like that idea!

It has been a while since I last posted an update in this topic. Not a lot has changed but I do have a final plan now on how to do the UV sheets. My plan is basically the same as Mineral's.

I sketched it all out in paint:

Image

Like Mineral told me I will use the 3rd person model's seats textures for the 1P person model as well. Same goes for the windows. The canvas top will be on a separate sheet.

This means I will have to rework my current 3P UV sheet a bit so I can put the windows and seats on it. When the 3P sheet is done I will add the fully UV Mapped seats and Windows to my 1P model after which I will UV map my 1P interior and position it's UV chunks where the 3P exterior used to be. That way I can simply texture the 3P model and then use that texture to make the 1P texture out off.

Also, should I change the shape of my windows?

Image

When they are modeled like this it is easy to get 'gaps' in between the window and the cabin frame and they result in a higher tri-count. They do however take less space on the UV sheet which is nice. What do you guys think?

Anyone? I want to know for sure I can put the windows on the main UV sheet before I move on.

Not really sure what other way you would make them hence I didn't answer personally :D

It depends how you planned it. You can put it on the main sheet, but then you need to add an alpha channel to it and make it DXT5. That will make the file bigger so in return probably have to reduce resolution. For best quality I would put it on a separate sheet so you can same main sheet without alpha and high resolution. The alpha channel for spec map would be added to the bump map which does not need to be that high quality.
If you want to optimize it even further you could look at objects\vehicles\Common\textures if any of the glass textures would be suitable, but probably better to make own.

Truck didn't make it into 1.4 did it? Didn't continued the work or just not finished yet?

Not finished yet, I am working on multiple projects at the same time. The rifle has the priority, when it's texture is done I will finish the truck + texture. :) By that time I hope someone will make a new map for the Dutch and we could perhaps make a small PR Dutch Armed Forces update with new maps, rifles, vehicles, etc.
