Um, yeah sorry guys. I have a few small tweaks to the maps you see but that is about it. Until last week I've been really busy with rl things and when January hits I wont be able to commit much time either. I had hoped to inspire more talented artists than myself to work on this project but other than a few maps by bloodbane nobody has stepped forward. It's not really a hard job but it can be rather time consuming.

If you think you can help with this project speak up and I will send you all the files and instructions you need. I still want to see this in game but am unable to deliver them in a timely manner.

The second post of the topic has a quote by ancientman that describes the process very well. I follow that almost to the letter to generate the contours.

I think What I will do is create all the contours for all the maps and then let others, such as Delta, fill in the details.

How's it going along so far? I'd love to see topographical maps as a "weapon" that only the SL can use, so that you'll need to really much more on actual landmarks and such as infantry and properly ID targets before engaging, though I haven't heard any other feedback on this.

I've started a new thread regarding using maps as a weapon, and I've linked back to this as I hope to get Topographical maps in place. Can you tell me how far along this is coming?

I decided to spend my first post on the PR forums on this thread. If it was for me this project would get the Community modding award 2009 :p If it actually continues that is ..

I very much hope that someone or multiple someones with the correct skills and dedication will pick-up the work where it is left, and continue to work on this fantastic project !!

I have been following this thread for almost a year now, and i must say the new backgrounds look VERY good in-game !!!

These maps look great, I'd love to see them in game :)
Although they're fine as they are, it would be cool if you marked in areas of woodland in on the maps, it would make them x10 times more useful

we use ariel photographs with a grid overlay irl. so good effort but tbh the current editor minimaps are the most realistic.

not up to me though.

only for much larger areas, e.g 100km2. We have the tech now to get ariel phots of pretty much anywhere.

at least the PRT might have use for such maps, yo can more easily see the paths up to mountains etc on them.

even though the real army uses high rez aerial photos we can't make those and it would be more helpful with height information

Nononono!

As a map designer I enjoy making a good looking overhead map. I do not want it to be replaced by some silly looking lines. Perhap it is "realistic" but it will decrease the visualy quality of the game A LOT. Ask yourself, what is more nice to look at? Google Earth satellite Images or military height maps?
