You need an answer from their lawyers not a tech support guy or webmaster. Official permission or whatever, I would guess no because whats in it for them

I wouldn't spend too much time on trying to talk to DICE staff and/or legal folks.

First things first...

...does the 128p hack work on a publicly available BF2 1.41 internet server:
1. without modifications to the client BF2.exe?
2. with modifications to the client BF2.exe?

The scope of what is being done is dramatically different if it's a server only modification.

No point trying to get "approval" for something you don't know works. Best to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission.

Oh come on, do you guys really think they care? Even if it violates eula do you think they'll do something about it? If we modify the server exe in such way, no harm will be made. If it's illegal and they'll sue someone, they won't gain anything except bad reputation.

We should try josh_sg1's method, afaik no one has ever tried it, josh_sg1 himself couldn't manage to get 65 players.

i have to agree with mosquill, i dont think dice/ea would really take the time to sue someone over a hacked .exe that doesnt even change the game they originaly put out. btw what if they said not to edit .exe so hackers could get sued? has anyone checked if mods are allowed?

I concur with the guys saying go for it. Really this can only expand the player base as this would be a huge leap for the BF2 community and would be news almost everywhere. I know I came to this mod after IGN.com made special mention of it, and loved it.

As far as editing the server side executables, doing it client side, both dlls and executables should be considered so that you can achieve more flexibility with the engine. Things like:

-increasing visibility (fog reduced and view distance increased a bit)
-increasing squad limit
-increasing teams (civilians have their own team? escort mission maps?)
-adding physics for detached vehicle parts/objects and pivot point physics (eg- trailers, helicopter tow cable, helicopter troop insertion cable)
-vehicle transformations (for showing damage done, limiting mobility by removing tires etc)
-correcting player movement on vehicles (eg- supply/support truck/trailer with troops actually moving on them to defend while driving)
-correcting vehicle on vehicle physics (eg- transport ferry, mobile bridges)
-adding secondary camera effects for remote controlled vehicles (small RC vehicles the military use for infiltration and recon)

Even if Dice or EA send a legal notice about it, everyone can just go back to the last stable soft modded PR and they can simply delist all servers that run only that version of the mod. For each release with a hard edit, have a soft edit as well that doesn't rely on EULA breaking stuff. I hope you guys go for it anyways, good luck.

Editing the exe's is not unlocking the source code...

But by all means can we then get this into action?

not hardcoded at all, i have played maps with 4km view distance, from the tests i have done, 5-6km view distance is max, so it is hardcoded if you want a 8km view distance, but i dont think most pc's would handle that.

Then go for it, just dont do it in the name of PR. I dont want my favorite mod getting its ******* ripped out its mouth because a few people figured EA woulldnt care about something "so little" :P

Im serious. Go for it. But leave no mention of PR in the path ;) ;) ;)

If you're actually serious, then give me 64 testers and a server and I'll go for it. ;)

Ok then just find a guy with a server and ask josh_sg1 about his method and test it. Thats all you have to do.

Well if you guys are in, you're gonna need a server to test it. If you already have a server then ask josh_sg1 to give you the files/instructions.

I don't have a server, so I can't do it myself.

If someone lives near DICE go and ask for a apointment with the guy who was the main head in the BF2 project and ask him if we can modify the exe, and by the way if the 128 hack works (i dont think they really care about it) than it means it will get more players to PR which in other words mean theyl buy BF2 which then again means profit for DICE !

Someone take the lead on this. Appoint yourself the organiser, state you're going to sort it.

-Then find a server.
-Gain the info on how to set it up
-Get the fix set up for the server
-Make a post in the main topic area of the forums with:

The date, the time, server IP, and any client-side fix required. Choose a date at least a week in advance of today's so that people have time to sort out their social lives to ensure they can make it and so that word of mouth can spread.

Someone just DO it.
