I dunno, the minimap on Kozelsk is useless for judging terrain, there's a big *** cliff that runs a long part of the map, yet you can barely see it on the minimap.Agent Parker wrote:Nononono!
As a map designer I enjoy making a good looking overhead map. I do not want it to be replaced by some silly looking lines. Perhap it is "realistic" but it will decrease the visualy quality of the game A LOT. Ask yourself, what is more nice to look at? Google Earth satellite Images or military height maps?

Re: [HUD] Topographical minimaps
I want to look at a nice COLORFUL map when I am dead. I hope the devs do not take this poll as repesentative, because if the OP would post the colormap next to the line map the results would be very different. The point is that a nice looking colormap for overview is a central part of the map, and during many hours of mapping which can be frustrating, looking at a nice top view of the map is the only thing taht keeps me going

These maps are awesome, I'd love to see these ingame but if it's unrealistic then sobeit. Maybe only for factions who wouldn't have access to aerial imagery? Nah, that's probably hardcoded.

Or you could blend the two in photoshop? Not sure of the results... But It could do it if you remove the white? bah..

This is probably late in the development, but here's the US Army's manual on topographic maps:
FM 21-31 Table of Contents
Even if it just adds one thing for authenticity then I'm happy

I think these would bring alot of depth to the game, call for more thinking and add alot more realism.

What is the status on the topo-maps?
I would like very much to see them in-game, especially for the CO.

If you read the thread topo maps may not be desirable.wuschel wrote:What is the status on the topo-maps?

e.g. Ed Macy states in his book 'apache' that Helmand province has been too dangerous to map for decades.

I really like it, but I also like the satellite maps.
Do soldiers still use topographical maps?

Re: [HUD] Topographical minimaps
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
I tried following the instructions on page 1 and have had no luck. I downloaded GIMP and tried to open a HeightMapPrimary.raw file and it did not recognize the format.

Hey, download the dds plugin for GIMP.
GIMP DDS plugin
Try this link for a .raw plugin. I havn't tested these but I hope it puts you on the right track.
GIMP raw
As for the .raw, it should work but I only used Photoshop for this. I'll try to look into it for you though, because I hope someone continues this project. I'll be of all the assistance I can but I don't have much free time anymore.

Re: [HUD] Topographical minimaps
hello! hope someone is still active here and can help me out.
I ran into a problem following the 2. post walkthrough.
It starts when importing the heightmap into "Wilbur". After converting the map using
"Texture -> other Maps -> Contour Map...".
I end up with a thing as shown below. Doesn't seem very useful to me.
Where did I go wrong? Any hints?

*note:
thers no need to screenshot the new texture inside wilbur, just save it as
"PNG Texture (*.png)" rather than "PNG Surface (*.png)"
*solved:
pushing the "Contour Interval" up to over 800 seems to work somehow.
