Well one advantage of seeing through smoke is before revealing your exact location as a tank (i.e. popping over a hill) you can pop smoke and then pull up and fire away. It'll be much harder for handheld AT to hit you since they can't see through smoke.Boris.T.Spider wrote:Yeah Zephyr that's kind of what I'm getting at. I'm not sure how to explain this but, the tankers may imagine that this change increases their potency by 100% when it only actually increases it by 25%. I wouldn't use smoke to break LOS on tank anyway, they just count to ten and HEAT the area. With this, maybe they can use their COAX rather than HEAT shells, but I don't see that as such a massive advantage as it appears to be on the surface,

It would have to be a Railgun... and be named Metal Gear.Boris.T.Spider wrote:Hell give the tank legs and a portable nuke launcher, see if I care.
Anyway, I think people are thinking too much of this when MOST HAVE NOT EVEN PLAYED .95!!!
Balance will be kept as Devs will not implement something without careful consideration.
Oh, and this is not Call of Duty thermal imaging... you do not see through walls.
Currently, smoke is still not the best thing to use when seeing tanks, as it tells tank driver where you are so the gunner can just spray the coaxial gun into the smoke and you still die.

PROJECT REALITY 2142!!!!!!Boris.T.Spider wrote:OMG Thermal Imaging for tanks! You have me quaking in my little army boots. /Sarcasm off.
What in PR is the greatest enemy of armoured units? Is it other tanks? Is it the dreaded HAT kit? Is it mines, C4 and IED's? NO! It is arrogance. Arrogance is what kills tanks in PR and all this change is going to do is swell their Epeen so big that they wont be able to get out of the .50 cupola without straining something. So what you can see through smoke? I can hear you at 1.5x the view distance and go places it cannot! Hell give the tank legs and a portable nuke launcher, see if I care.

ok, enough bs. thermal isnt suposed to change tank v tank warfare. what it will change is fights with those pesky insurgents and their damn RPG's. all the "arrogent" pubbers will forget about thermals 1 week in, leaving the people who actually know how to crew vehicals to use them properly.

2 word counter to TI: Covered Foxholes.
Alternatively, A dropable blanket for every soldier... think of it as a TI-proof soldier deployed bush. It would at least mitigate the GOD eye of a TI equipped UAV/aircraft. Make it require some shoveling so that it isn't exactly an insta-counter. But the UAV is still all powerful against troops on the move.

Re: PR 0.95 - Thermal Imaging
There seems to be some confusion over Thermal Imagery. TI is Far IR, whereas Image Intensification (II) is Near IR. TI is a completely different way of looking at things. What you see is the difference between temperatures, hot AND cold. So if something is warmer or cooler than it's background, it will stand out. It all depends on how heat is radiated and absorbed by different materials and is known as Emissivity. For example, cold tyres appear cooler, but heat up very quickly due to friction. Same goes for tracks, but more so. Also you cannot see through glass, but I wouldn't recommend hiding from a tank in a greenhouse.
As for smoke, you cannot see through natural smoke (fires etc), but you can through man-made smoke. Although as already stated, there has been an 'anti-thermal' smoke around for some time. Some materials can reflect the cold sky too making them appear extremely cold, especially glass, but this is in addition to not being able to see through it. Aircraft can display 'skin friction' and this is the air being heated up across the surfaces due to friction and appearing hot. The faster it goes the 'hotter' it appears. This is also the case for rotor blade tips on helicopters.
Sorry for this epic first post. No doubt I've forgotten something too. If any of the devs would like to know more please get in touch.
Edited to add: Thermal camouflage does exist too for vehicles and individuals. So it's not all doom and gloom.

While posting such many information, i would suggest givin' some sources along them, too.
As for the inability to see trough glass, i say:
Yay, now i can hide from these pesky AAVs on muttrah just behind windows! Oh, wait, there aint no glass

We must donate some glass to MEC so they can start adding windows.
And TI is good thing, you must use new ways to destroy armor in INS. And also, it kills those HAT snipz0rs.

I remember seeing a video where they could see the temp difference in the disturbed dirt that was moved to plant the IEDs on the road the night before and that's how they were spotting it from the air.xatu miller wrote:why would they?

Thats why i never put thermal on as a driver on a insurgency map. Even on symetrical warfare i remove it when passing trought field channeling area.

Re: PR 0.95 - Thermal Imaging
I have a few questions.
1. How do you zoom in with vehicle optics?
2. How do you change cameras? On vehicles like the Kiowa i have heard about "mast mounted cameras". How do you access these?
Thanks!
