You can have dynamic shadows on statics afaik, but the point of pre-rendering them is to save processing power. e.g. if you stood in the center of burning sands with dynamic shadows on everything thats hundreds of new shadows to render.

regarding people telling other people to search etc, please just don't post - use the report function under *moderating options* so the right people can give the approrpriate response to the thread :)

For those max 4 hours, it would really be so probleatic even with static shadows. Also afternoon into dark transition wouldnt be bad with static shadows... Anything else, more of a problem, but its not so major. With dynamic, even better.

Like Rudd Said . . it takes up way too much processing power . . . if we had the dynamic sun in game then it would be laggy LIKE NO OTHER . .. it would make the game impossible to play . . .

BUT a likley alternative that IS possible and COULD be inplimented into game is . . . .

When a new map is loaded * * It Randomly chooses a Time and then you play the map at one of a few pre set Sun positions and sky images. Sooo .. If it chooses for example "sun rise" the preset sky views could load up with the preset. if it is night time thennnn ofcourse it would be black as hell and no one could see anything . . unless everyone gets Night vision but . . night maps dont seem to last very long with PR because the impossibilities to see Anything! lol

So you should be asking " When can we have Randomized Preset Map Times and sun positions "

Night vision shaders are buggy with certain computers iirc.

In anycase. I heard that the dynamic sun was really a concept test of dynamic weather. Really though I can't imagine the wild card of weather being a good gameplay element. More or less just frustrate the commanders (like in real life).

It will look dumb. The video showed a humvee. When the sun changed positions, it updated the dynamic lighting. The problem is that the shadows for buildings are calculated when building the map, so your computer doesn't have to do it every time you load the map. SO, if this was implemented;

1. The sun would only move a little bit. This isn't Minecraft, this is (at most) four hours of a regular game. So there wouldn't be much of a difference.

2. The vehicle and player shadows would move, but not the buildings' shadows. Also, the buildings would always be lit the way they were in the editor. (If a map changed from day to night, the world lighting would change, but all the objects would be lit for morning and be all bright.)

So, it wouldn't look good, and also, it wouldn't work. And its not even worth it because the sun would be moving very slowly and there would only be a slight change in the end.

And it will look ugly and i will have to wait every 4 hours to change sun position

If you actually didnt do a TL;DR on the last page, you would notice that it was said that buildings can have dynamic shadows but pre rendered shadows dont cause PCs to go haywire.

i know it would take you 3 times longer to finish the lightmaps, but couldnt it be worth it?

mod would be alot larger then. And the sun direction would be static, instead of constantly moving. So it would only have say 4 different positions.

If you can make the shadows follow a code that makes it copy itself, so in theory you are just looking at the same shade all over the place. Then it might not hog up as much "memory".

And i know for a fact terrain color can change without alot of processing power being spent.

But as stated, you need to find a solution that removes the fact that you have 100 different shades in one map, to the same shade being used, and only when you look at it.

not with new lightmaps, no, it would be an incredible waste of bandwidth. and a waste of time tbh.

You can load different skies per gameplay layer, as we've done on al basrah

however you would only be able to change the lighting (colours etc) if the sun was in teh same location on that new skytexture.

e.g. thats what we did on the new version of Jabal, the new sky had the sun in the same location, so we didn't need to redo many Lightmaps at all.

and that would be nice imo, changing between dawn, midday and dusk - however you'd have to just accept that the sun is in the wrong position most of the time :P

like a midday lighting but teh sun is strangely low, or a dusk lighting and the sun is strangely on the east instead of west (or north if the map accidentally put it there ;P)
