Exactly! As fas as I know PRTA is the only server that makes Mumble required. You can get a non-mumbled kicked if you have mumble for instance when the server is filling up. TG and NWA like Mumble but do not enforce it. On TG theres usually a lot of mumblers as well.

Think about wether you want to truly start using it tho because once you do, you don't want to play on non-mumble servers anymore ;) You'll miss the communication with other SL's when making battle-plans, you'll miss the ability to tell a guy right next to you to to take cover and so on.

It saved my *** and the asses of my squad-members a lot of times!

Many others do, but most of the time aren't enforced.

Try out the servers where mumble is mandatory (ie. Sisu, PRTA.)
In most cases, admins are on and kicking non mumblers. There is nothing better than having a whole team on mumble.

The need for the local commo rose disappears. Obv you still need it to say "Cease Fire," "Need an APC," or spot infantry etc. but you don't need to yell "I need a medic" with all the enemies nearby hearing you as well. If you just call out on mumble, any enemies will not know you are nearby. The medics around you can quickly and effectively get to you because of the directional audio you without having to fuss around on chat, open up the map, etc. :)

thank god arma2 has the best of mumble's features built in! no more trying to talk dumb people into using it.

think about it like this: in real life you dont call somebody when you are right next to them to tell them something every second of your life (especially a group of people). squad voip is more like a group call or RADIO. where Mumble would be like face to face talking. nobody should have to explain its use...

IT COMES WITH PR FOR A REASON

Mumle breaks my sound, makes everything corrupted, never got round to fixing it so I don't bother with it anymore.

I also wish they would streamline the channel selection a bit, its pretty tedious as is.

It's muffled as firetruck and you have to be right next to them in order to hear them. This is with sound turned up manually.

When I fly It makes it so much easier for people to just tell me where they have to go. They don't have to type and I don't have to take my focus away from flying to read the chat.

(off topic i know lol)

Oh yeah XD sorry I meant ACRE Advanced Combat Radio Environment and Advanced Combat Environment(Correct if I'm wrong) sound alike haha, speaking of which I can't wait for PR:A2 to release XD it should be almost here, and thank god there's an installer for it!

But back on topic, I really do believe that if the OP goes on TG or any server that REQUIRES mumble, then he would be hooked.

Does mumble not allow EVERYONE listen to non-SL channel chats within 50m?

I've heard that older versions of mumble allow all players, including enemies, to hear within a certain distance. However, now that there are two separate teams on mumble, the enemies won't be able to hear you and visa versa unless one of you is in the wrong mumble channel.

I find mumble usefull for a future basis, thinking of the 128 player setup that is being worked on. With 64 players on each team there'll be alteast 8-1O player squads. Therefore making it quite disruptive when in Armour, or split up into 2 fireteams as infantry.

Mumble is also helpfull for Heli-Transport usage, as the pilot no longer have to text to players where they need to go, simple talk to them, therefore making the communication better between the pilot and the infantry etc..

The negative side...

From what i've experienced, it is a lot more fun if you could get all players into the same channel, leaving only squad leaders seperated into 2 channels. Would be cool to talk to your enemy again.

We've done it a few times with the clan, just joining up in the same channel while doing practise. Just for the fun of it xD

Uss-finest.

You obviously do not squadlead a lot. How do you tell a pilot where you want to be dropped off? Without mumble you spam chat.

Also a nice side effect is, playing on servers that require mumble sets an minimum IQ threshhold among the playerbase, because you need to be able to install mumble and get it to work.

At least thats how I explain games on SISU servers with 128 random people having been rather well coordinated, when I expected total cause and mayhem :p .

EDIT: Oh yeah forgot about armor squads. It kinda helps when your driver doesnt talk to 9 people and confusion ensues about whom is talking to who.

I'd love to be able to hear the enemy lol. Except all of the taliban/insurgent teams would be yelling war cries like "Allah Allah!!!!" lmao.

Also:

SL: ok, everyone; grab a shovel and let's dig up this FOB.

SM1: sure.
SM2: okay.
SM3: copy that.
SM4: roger:
SM5: im on it.
SM6(??????!!!!!!1111): hehe, alright...

*Everyone freezes as they realize that there are only 6 people in the squad and no friendlies around...*

to each his own, however this is how I see it in the public games.

1) if the enemy can hear you, everyone stops speaking and just uses VOIP - all mumble benefits are therefor removed
- Realism decrease as IRL you can whisper or use hand signals (whispering through a mike sounds like wind)
- Fun decrease since you are no longer able to talk to your blues
2) if everyone can hear you Mumble becomes even more spammable than currently
- Dead enemies at your feet shouting at you to distract you
- If someone gets unlinked thats 64 people instead of 32 who can hear them
3) Its not realistic for the entire enemy team to speak your team's language
4) some players start infringing server rules with extreme insults and language towards the enemy team, there's no fun in that. People become more interested in teabagging than playing.

Mumble is a communication tool, not a 100% realistic simulation aid but the two channel setup is definately superior. When we discovered this program iGi ran the first mumble nights around here, and we quickly discovered how players would soon misuse the program with a 1 team setup.

Playing PR with Mumble was like completly rediscovering what PR is about. Teamwork, and being able to so easily coordinate and communicate. Made playing a joy.

But all games still rely on the dude next to you, the program doesnt improve you in any way you can physicaly measure. And it certainly doesnt give you more kills, but it gives you far more options and many more possibilities.

You can warn people of APCs etc etc.
