Or use the overlay...

Personally I'd put Mumble force center over VOIP anytime because of two simple reasons, the quality and less delay. Many times both of these factors are essential for success, be it on small, or large scale.

As a SL I have a hard time figuring out whos talking when my SM's us mumble SQ force center. It sounds too much like a SL is trying to get a hold of me.
I have no problem with voip being off. If someone talks on force center, I assume it to be squad chat, until proven otherwise.
This is sq 5 to 3...
If they can't do a simple call-sign, they can't expect an answer. If they don't need an answer, it doesn't matter who's talking.

Too bad the overlay doesn't work for me, it would make this a non-issue.

Overlay would really improve my voice based team/squad coordination. But, yeah, it doesn't work for me.

Like others have said useing the overlay does the same thing as voip does, pops up a name of who is tanlking and in the overlay you can have squad names pop up too, and if its local or force center. Voip I don't think should be disabled, just like mumble shouldn't be enforced. It should be encouraged but kicking someone because they don't have mumble or it doesn't work for them is like kicking somone because they don't have a mic, something I don't agree with and something that turns off new players and players with technical difficulties.

To your original question you should definetly encourage your clan to get it and use it, for 95% of them I doubt it with be buggy, and will work fine. It offers many advantages and if people use it properly, no disadvantages.

Kicking people who don't have Mumble is definitely justified, especially if the server is full for example.

The Mumble-using majority shouldn't have to cater for those who aren't using it.

for reasons mentioned by Massive, ease into it. start with just adding mumble and encouraging/enforcing it's use. then once mumble becomes more complete and integrated into the mod itself, then turn off voip. Until it is fully integrated a lot of new guys aren't going to know.

edit: what's the overlay?

@Bringer

Mumble Overlay is a way to see names of who is talking as an overlay to the game (PR in this case) you are running. Check out this thread for some more information, as well as an awesome overlay setup.

@Back on Topic

I absolutely love the new Mumble. This being said, it must be taken into account that there are still people playing on very old machines that are pushed to their limit by PR. Additional applications, even one as small as Mumble, can push these machines too far. I know this to be a fact, as there is a member of my clan that has this very problem.

While it is easy to pop off the standard, "time for an upgrade," type of responses, this is not the attitude that I think should be prevalent within the community. There are multiple factors to consider about that person's real world situation. Having a family to support, being a full time student, paying bills, personal disability, and younger players that have no income are all present in this community in large numbers. The fact that they are playing PR above anything else out there on a machine that can barely run the game is outstanding. These players should be encouraged, not shut out due to a negative attitude in the community because of the quality of their hardware. In some instances, requiring Mumble flatly eliminates a server as a play option for these players, either due to hardware or technical issues.

Speaking of which, technical support for players must be considered. While a player can sometimes find support for Mumble within the community, it can be difficult. I would recommend a new forum section for PRMumble support within the Project Reality Support section. This would give players a more centralized location to seek support, as well as making it easier to locate fixes for common problems, or issues that had already been solved. With the continued integration of PRMumble into PR, I think that this is a necessary step.

I'm not sure if you can have a global-disable for VOIP, but smart servers will turn it off to save server resources.

Instead of the server sending and receiving voice, mumble does it client side :)

BF2 Voip is a not resource heavy so its not an issue. Tried without it few days, then I turned it back on, really no big deal.

I do agree on kicking those who are not on mumble first, and for that purpose we got people working on AD framework function which will check if a player is connected to mumble server, and if found not, it will announce some type of message, either to a player affected in private message, or to admins, or both, and then if he does not join it after some number of warnings, he will be removed from server automatically. Like autokick with reason Not on mumble for example.

This puts all players who are using mumble to an advantage over those who are not, and its quite good solution, if and when it gets implemented. Its still in form of idea, its not easy to be made, but I hope it will.
