I was kind of wrong. I tested it with a friend of mine a couple of minutes ago. He got in the Eurocopter, and I in the American AAV (Avenger). He could hear me lock when he was 1300 feet away, but I could see his heat-signature at 1000. When he got in the Blackhawk on the same team as me, however, I could see his heat-signature at 1300 feet, not at 1000 feet as it was when he was on the enemy team.
I know he's only 1249 feet away from me there, but I could see him at 1300. If you don't believe me ask for another screenshot.

That's interesting, I can't explain that one.
BTW the distance is in meters, not feet

In other words, you should probably be flying around 1400-1500 alt to avoid being aa'd to death.

The cool thing is on black gold, the view distance is larger than the helicopter's lock ranges, so it really changes the helicopter fighting and gives a chance to run instead of fighting.

Please don't get me wrong, it wasn't that I didn't believe you, but surely you must understand when a dev says 'X' and someone else says 'not X', the onus lies on the non-dev to prove their statement. I just wanted to know the true/whole story, so getting screenshots up is the best/easiest way to confirm/deny things. You've clearly done that, so thanks!

Wasn't he using wrong vehicle? This should be tested with igla not avenger. Avenger uses stingers and they got lower locking distance than igla which has highest among all. Sorry if I'm wrong but I concluded that from previous posts.

the HUD locking distance is what really matters, which on most ADVs is 99999
Code: Select all
rem ---BeginComp:MultiFireArmTargetComp ---
ObjectTemplate.createComponent MultiFireArmTargetComp
ObjectTemplate.target.maxDistance 99999
ObjectTemplate.target.targetSystem TSHeatSeeking
ObjectTemplate.target.lockDelay 1
ObjectTemplate.target.loseLockDelay 0
ObjectTemplate.target.lockAngle 15
rem ---EndComp ---
The missile locking distance just means that the missile needs to travel forward a bit before it finds its target.

So if we have hud limited to 700 - 1000m, and missile to 850 - 1300m, missile will only lock upto 1000 which is hud maximum and will not track its target upto its max range?
E : Ill think of it tomorrow I feel so braindead now / dead tired

There is no min lock distance that I'm aware of (possibly might be in the settings somewhere would need to check but if it is, we don't use it on any of our weapons afaik) if that's what your implying above.
For info on AA, I suggest you read post #11 in this topic:

I didn't get you wrong. I totally understand that you wanted a screenshot. As I said, I was kind of wrong, as I was sure I could see the enemies' heat-signature at 1300 feet.

some more AA videos, this time in higher bitrate
pesticide - Operate the AA in PR and feel the love!
pesticide - The difficult situations when operating the AA in Project Reality
pesticide - More love for the AA operater and getting a kill on the havox
on the second video id really like to know what a dev would expect us to do in the situation a friendly blackhawk at 600 meters and a enemy lock at 1200 meters but going away soon, if i should have fired or not, kinda did not expect to hit the blackhawk as it was below the hill already
