Will it read Blu-rays right out of the box or do I need some sort of special software?

I agree. I have the same disk drive in my desktop. I haven't opted to install any software (since I was movies on a TV through a PS3). I read through a lot of reviews on the video software and didn't really find any that popped out at me for the price. Most of the one's you'll find costs anywhere from $50 to $150.
