Within the distance of a room or small hallway, I don't even need to use the sights and can relatively reliably hit the head with one shot, and I'm not a very good shot otherwise. Greatly depends on ping though, as Mike said. Maybe I've just been lucky as far as lag was concerned.
You do this while you're taking fire by the enemies you're trying to kill?

Compared to your rifle? Not even close. The only rifle it might actually beat in CQB is the G3, but every other rifle is superior. Having an M4/M16 on burst is a lot better than using the lousy M9, same with the full-auto weapons in PR.

Pistols are horrible in this mod, unfortunately.
True.

Pistols are very underpowered since 0.9. Just useful to get some "roleplaying" on, as agemman mentioned already.

For close quarters, the pistols are just hopeless vs any rifle (except the sniper) in PR atm and I personally believe that this should be fixed asap, that the pistol gives you atleast a little chance to win vs a "normal" player with a semi-automatic rifle on short distances.

I use the sidearm to save my *** on a weekly basis. If im in a close quarters firefight and run out of ammo i almost allways charge my opponent with my sidearm instead of taking cover and reloading. That usually surprises them (since they expect you to be reloading like most people do) and i can quite often kill them while they are reloading or just because they are so surprised. I have even managed to take out half squads several times in this way.
Not because the pistol is good though, it does suck vs rifles. But the element of surprise is your friend :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of the conventional factions do have body armor that are made to stop pistol caliber bullets, which makes the pistol less effective

It's not just about that though. It's the fact that it's easier, safer and more convenient to clear a building/room with your main rifle instead of your sidearm, which makes the pistol useless. Sure, shooting someone in the head with your sidearm will kill them, but using your rifle is a lot easier.

I've came across a couple of situations when the pistol was useful. But for the most part, I find hipfire to be the most successful when assaulting a room.

My use of the pistol is like most people: a last resort and I die anyway. I've got two tales of note with it though.

A while back (.95 probably), I was sniping on Kokan. My spotter and I arrived at our desired compound, and for some reason, I was on point. I managed to bag 3-4 dudes in one of the two-story buildings. They just weren't expecting to get overrun.

More recently on Iron Eagle, I was west of Alkonin (sp?) fighting in the hills, and I suddenly took contact to my right. I turned, emptied the rest of my CTAR at the dude, who was prone down the hill 50-75 meters down the hill. He was still up, and still shooting at me. Switched to the pistol, and emptied the mag at him, and killed him on the last shot.

I've never had an issue with the pistol.
I usually forget that I have it when playing SQL, but its saved my arse copious times when as a sniper.

Not sure why some of you are unable to survive with it, bad luck is the only thing I can think of.

The worst thing about pistols is that theres that annoying delay between shots.

Preferably before taking return fire, otherwise obviously I'll catch a bullet (although probably only to the chest when the enemy has also been moving, due to rifles higher movement deviation).

To be clear, I might remember instances of 0.8 and mix them up with 0.9x here.

Many times in 0.8, occasionally in the following releases.
The only exception being PR:V, in which I often choose the Colt 1911 over the M14 for close combat situations, this gun is awesome, the low recoil/deviation and the power of the .45ACP associated with the lack of body armors make enemies fall like flies.
Many thanks to everyone involved in the making of the best videogaming experience ever !

Not often. :( The pistols ingame should make a liddl bit more damage.
Also in my feeling of gameplay, the difference between reloading and switching to pistol is the same.

Many times, it's especially useful when the enemy thinks you need to reload and tries to storm you.

The time when enemy SQ came looking for SL I took out. Opposing player empitied its magazine as I emptied my entire magazine on that player about 10 ft away. We were both out. That player started sprinting as he reload. At same time I Picked up the downed SL kit, M9 came out so I fired once at side of torso as he runned.

If you ask me Handgun in this mod is not real compared to how rifle is depicted. You can aim it way too quickly, No deviation compared to rifle at all stance or after changing stance, No recoil, and even after repeating that recoilless shots in quick supression (about 300rpm) your aim won't deviate.

Infact, Hangun in this mod is so good, I take Pilot kit or Insurgent AA kit on purpose just for fun. In case of Pilot kit in Insurgency with 15 shot handgun and no body armor on receiving end, if you know the streets in city fight, you can become action movie hero.

Every time I need to use my sidearm as SL in PR? This...

Suggestion for 1.0: Throwing Helmet at enemy is Alternate Melee Option. Also, after the last round of your last mag, you can throw your pistol at your enemy too.

As others have said it mainly works in close quarter fights when your main weapon runs out of ammo and you rush without reloading for a surprise tactic, otherwise I find the pistol to be pretty limited in any sort of usefulness. It weak, so if your a blu for SL for example and you use it vs your opponent that has a high caliber weapon he downs you in his 2-3 shots on full auto vs your 5 on single. Not good odds and many times giving the pistol a chance when I had a scoped weapon for example in close quarter I got dominated. The pistol really is one weapon thats only for emergencies to be used as a failsafe to your primany weapon. It is too weak currently to have much real use in my opinion.

I've actually used a pistol before in sticky situations. Ran out of ammo on my rifle just as a guy was about to charge me. Pulled out my pistol, sprayed and prayed for victory.

2or3 times, I can't remember some of them clearly, except one

In the map of black gold skirmish, I was an Russian SL, shooting at an Chinese medic, we almost empty our magazines together, and both got a shoot. Then he got in a room quickly and got out a bandage as soon as my makarov aimed at him. The last thing he did before dead made me laugh for two minutes, he just jumps like a rabbit and hoped not get shoot from me. Unfortunately, he was at the corner of the room, that made his every jump stopped by wall. Finally, he got a headshot in the air and fell down like a broken doll.

Since then, I always remember to take out my pistol instead of reloading
I never think about to come back alive when I come to this world ;-)
