A friend of mine got a new computer in April I believe, not quite smart of him as he's now an exchange student in the US, meaning his computer would be unused for 10 months, so I figured I might as well rent his computer until he comes home. He'll make some money, I'll save some, and I'll get my own system when he's back.

Old thread but you might have smushed the pins on your motherboard's socket while placing the CPU back in. I had similar symptoms on a 1155 board.

I guess that could have happened, even though I was very careful when both removing and placing the CPU.

maybe you spilled some thermal paste and shorted the board out? do you know if the paste you used was conductive or not?
