I can understand why mics are necessary, but I do feel there should be some option to play without them. Some of use have good reasons not to use them. In my case, my voice is a pretty juicy abuse magnet online, and I've had too many bad experiences to go back to using one again. If that means playing on segregated servers for those without mics only, fine. If it means something else, fine as well, so long as I can have fun in coop.

Once again, if you're getting abuse from other players or admins on servers, either report them or join a different server. If you have a mic and the willingness to use it, do it!
It's come up quite a few times that some players are abusing others, and it's quite disturbing to see so many are taking it lightly. On the server I admin on (PRTA), we take abuse allegations seriously. We welcome newer players, but we require that people use mics, because we feel it makes the gameplay a great deal better but it also helps us bond as a community. Hell, i've only been on PRTA a few months and already there are loads of players i can just jump into a squad with and have a great time, and I'm sure there are many other servers that are very similar.
At the end of the day, it does depend on the server you are on as to the type of players you meet. Like I said, if you have a mic and WANT to use it, DO IT. If you don't, seriously consider using one, and get on the right servers, because it can turn a good round of PR into a fantastic one, simply by being able to chat and have a laugh with whoever you are playing with.

I get where you're coming from. Mics do make the game better. The problem is, I have a FAR too masculine voice for a girl, and my experience with other games has been that I will get a metric ton of shit for it. I could report them, but it makes me feel like a little kid when I have to go running to the admin every five minutes. While I certainly wish I could play with a mic, I choose not to so I can avoid this situation. I understand that this greatly limits my options, but as long as some coop servers are around that'll let people go micless, I'll be fine.

I know, right? It's like.... I don't know... it's like a crippled man coming to a team of runners and asking if he can join and that he'll totally rock with his inability...
No offense, but telling people like that that its gonna be alright as it is just aint gonna fucking cut it. Imagine someone starting/running a company? Will he employ just everyone and tell him that its completely okay at the aprt of no experience but also the mental disability is not a problem? See where i'm going?
You own and use a mic; You are respected.
You don't defend the sniper kit and lonewolfing; You are respected.
You use common sense; You are respected
You use authority; You are respected
You are friendly; You are respected
You know whats right and whats wrong; You are respected.
And so on... PR is a semi-milsim game which requires thinking (hard to do for many) microphones (also apparently hard), and common sens (not present at all)... skill/knowledge comes with time, but with these three, you should be born with them... expect the microphone. It would be awkward to be borne with a microphone.

Don't tell them you're a girl. Problem solved.
Seriously though, I have yet to see people get abused because of speech issues on this game over a period of 4 years. And I've played with people who have lisps, squeeky voices, thick accents, etc...
People on this game will give you alot of shit on how you play, but not on how you talk. From my experience.

If you guys can't or really don't want to talk you can get by with saying very little, for lemonade just prepare some cutting put downs on paper before hand, sounds like fun to me.

The only time i have a problem with how somebody talks is when they just can not shut up. So long as you arent vomiting into the mic every second then you should be fine.

My microphone recently got busted (line snapped) and I tried to play with some friends for a few rounds and days. It seriously got me so frustrated I went straight to this indian shop just to buy a headphone with a mic on it. A mic in my expierience is required but not compulsory.
I have a rather different accent and the only thing they usually ask is where I am from.

I dunno. I've heard some scary things about the in game community here. I still feel I have more time needed offline before I can move towards coop, so I haven't seen it yet, but it intimidates me.

I prefer being quiet to switching to a non-feminine name and hiding my gender to suit other people's immaturity.

Again, I think it does depend on which servers you go to. There will be some that will go 'lol ur a gurl get back to da kitchen n mek me a sammich lolololol', and then there are others that simply will not care and treat you the same as any other new player.
So long as you tell them that you're new to the game, and the SL isn't an asshat, no-one gives a shit. Follow orders, call out your contacts, shoot where they shoot, and don't take sniper kits, you'll be fine. It's like heavy death mentioned on the last page - common sense should prevail. And if you've got a list of scathing comebacks to put said imbeciles in their place if they do spark up, all the better. Hell, chances are that'd get you even better in the community if you can handle yourself here.
Put what you've heard about the in-game aside for a bit. I dunno about the servers in the states, but the european servers that i've played on have all been extremely friendly, especially towards new players. And yes, i'm pretty sure many of us have seen girls in game before. I remember (this one time, at band camp...) there was one girl who was on, someone gave her some shit, she gave it right back to them, everyone got on like a house on fire and she came out best player in the squad.
But all said and done, it's great you're getting to grips with the game mechanics on co-op, they'll be some good steps before you venture into a wider world.

just last night i was killed over and over whilst i stop to type to the squad members with no mic.
Also, if ure saying they hurt your ears they probably screaming at you to answer them. BUY MIC WIN GAMES GET INVOLVED
You don't need to type to the people with no mic. It's not like they can't hear you.

There is was that AUT Monique in Europe who used to play mostly with her clan mates. When I did run into her on local it was pleasant to hear female tones, and my feeling was respect for having the balls to play on a male dominant game.
Might be a good solution for lemonade to join a clan and try to play with them until you feel ready to face the larger community.

In all my years of PRTA we had 2 girls in the community and I always felt that we did a good job of keeping them comfortable and out of nasty comments. Although I feel, and I'm pretty sure others too, that it's impossible to filter such comments on a daily basis in a male dominant game. If you have the attitude and sense of humor then you shouldn't be that worried. Speak up and you'll do fine. I've witnessed many times this particular girl joining a pubbie squad and no one questioning if she is a girl.

We'll see how it goes. Just picked up a Red Samurai at Gamestop.
Say, do most squad leaders and commanders have a problem with voice morphing software? Using it to feminize my voice seems like a fair solution to my specific issue. My problem isn't comments against women in general, it's that my voice is so masculine people think I'm a guy, which I hate (Yes, it is logical to think someone with a male sounding voice in a male dominated game is male. That doesn't make it easier to like being called him/he.), or if they don't mistake me for a guy I get **** for how I sound like a Brumhilda.
