Its GameSpy closing their servers, they have nothing to do with the games they were hosting and EA is fully aware of the small amount of players left playing these. BF2 was based on GameSpy, even if EA wanted to do something they could not without completely overhauling BF2 masterserver structure, which ofc will not happen.
Read post #16 Spook. GameSpy it's killing its services to publishers, whom haven'tbeen paying their fees. This is happening because EA isn't paying anymore.
It looks like they are closing GameSpy, maybe they went bankrupt. That is sad . Bf2 is dying. Anyway i hope dev's will find a workaround. Pr is such a great game.
"EA, Ubisoft, and Capcom did not respond to our requests for comments. Gearbox pointed us to 2K Games, which declined to say anything. We will update this article with any additional information we receive." - Quote from the article on IGN. Typical EA they wont give a damn.
Some of vbf2 RU\UA\BY servers used such emulators for custom stats or something.
The only issue which i can remember is that clients needed to modify hosts file.
On May 30, could we all just hop on vBF2 and give it a farewell, maybe an official PR Vanilla server with 100 players ? Sucks I will never be able to run 0.97 again without my local account...
PR:BF2 development will of course not cease. We'll be able to deal with this, as will FH2 and probably every other mod that tries (though no other mods seem to have any playerbase anymore).
Wait I just realized... if gamespy goes down and we end up hosting our own server system... pirated copies of the game will start working haha
I guess the silver lining of this, is that PR will finally be 100% free xD BF2 included...
Edit: Actually the more I read into this... the more it seems like a good thing. We'll finally be a completely independent community, not tied to EA... hell if this happens, we could probably start trying to break into the source code and do all sorts of things without having to worry about EA getting pissed, or breaking networkability.
Should PR just somehow join STEAMWORKS server network?
seems like most game i see on there uses there server browser like games i own Insurgency, CS:GO all use the same server browser
