When DICE were developing Battlefield 2, they had a lot of features like fastropes, underwater diving, dropable helmets (Alpha mods), getting tags etc but those were never finished or scraped (but left over) due to meeting EA's release.
It's called Alpha because, in versions you have Alpha which is like a concept version of the game, Beta which is the near-finish concrete game and then you got the final version which is the polished one.
They scrapped vehicles, fastropes, underwater etc due to time constraints/EA.
Though things like lazing, dynamic physics (movable objects), etc is still there in the final version.
I'd never seen those demo vids before, interesting to see what the devs had envisaged the game being like

I remember seeing in the days before the Battlefield 2 beta, the fast ropes, damn I was disapointed when playing the beta with no fast ropes, and then in the alpha again disappointed.
MORE IMPORTANTLY...
Is there anyway PR2 can avoid people needing to use Origens server browser? Can you not make it so people can join games from a server browser based in the launcher? This would be awesome, as I don't really want to use origen, I like my personal copy, its one thing that makes me enjoy BF2 compared to a lot of newer games. And I'm sure we'll loose a lot of players from other random countries who can't telephone origen due to language barriers and such, south america, chinese, russian players, all of them!
So wish PR2 was standalone!
When does the copy right on BF2 run out? Hahaha.

You can run BF2 without opening Origin. I know because I have an Origin Account.
Go to C:\Program Files\Origin\Games\Battlefield 2 and just create a shortcut of BF2.exe
You can uninstall Origin and still play Battlefield 2. Just not for Battlefield 3 and 4.
As for PR2, it doesnt use Origin because the game is independent from EA/Dice BF2 and it is created from scratch using the superior next-gen compatible free CryTek CryEngine 3 Engine and Tools. It would just use CryEngine server browser in-game. Since its a from scratch game, it will take more time than simply modding an existing game. Foundation Engine work involves a great deal of work including learning curves, foundations like bullet penetration, movement, implenting vehicles, coding, weapons, props, vegetation, models, features, menu, anti cheat, bug fixing and factions i.e.
And yes it is standalone. Teams of PR:BF2, PR:Arma and PR2 are independent. PR2 can do whatever they want with the game. It is answered in Ask a dev thread.

Destroying IEDs by putting C4 on them would be awesome for example
I knew about that thanks to some snooping around good ol' battlefield 2 sp forums
If they could provide all of their codes for the left-over features, and the whole game that modders haven't figured out how to recreate, including bringing that 1.2 ability with the patch, then great! They have nothing to loose, since it's a classic game. But they are probably bound by EA. Well it's still good for both of them since more coding and more freedom/much needed feedback and response will bring more people into modding. Battlefield 2 is still alive.

You'd figure EA would be all over this since mod's are the only reason people buy BF2 anyhow. More sales of an obsolete game for them. I am failing to see the downside for EA.

What's so "cool" about fastropes?
Doesn't it make the helicopter more visible and more vulnerable to missiles and other attacks?

You can hover over uneven surfaces and drop troops. You won't kill yourself like you would if you try to land on something not flat. Anything with greater than 5 degree slope will cause PR choppers to flip on their sides.
You can drop them on small rooftops.

Matimio, one of the major Battlefield YouTubers, addressed the Gamespy situation.
Man he was killing it in 1942!
(He totally forgot about Battlefield Vietnam though )

Maybe because of Bad Company 2 Vietnam, which had no jets and smaller maps though... -.- -.-
@ Spush, not true, already the custom-map Saigon 1968 was an EPIC underground tunnel map!!!

No, between Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2 there was a Battlefield Vietnam. Not Bad Company. Just Battlefield Vietnam.

Let me reiterate: EA, nor DICE will have anything ready by May 31st. The PR devs will have nothing prepared when this happens, and the forums will be flooded by people bitching about how they're unable to play PR. I will say then, as I say now: told you so.

Bro, when that shit happens feel free to say about how you "told us so". Until then its pointless to brag about something that didnt even happen.
