I sometimes go CO, but usually only when no-one else will and commander is vital (atleast in my opinion). This out of pure necessity, its really not that fun compared to shooting people. In these cases, i dont interfere with tactics, thats to advanced for me, and the respective SL's job. Im usually having a hard enough time finding a squad willing to defend flags while all the others run for the next. But hey, a not-very-good-CO is still much better than none (in most cases).
Tip of the Day; When seeing red dots coming from a distinct direction, use birdview to scout for enemy rallys. Important CO-trait in my book.
