id say ground then 1st 2nd 3rd - but i would call this building a 4 storey even if i only count to 3rd floor

To avoid confusion I call the bottom floor of a three-story building the "third floor from the top" and the top floor the "third floor from the bottom." Naturally, the remaining floor is referred to as the "the one in between." You guys follow?

Ah this old chestnut. I mostly use ground 1st etc (the proper way) but if I think more clarity is needed, I'll clarify with the number of floors up from the street level, or down from the roof. i.e. Naughty people 2nd floor balcony, 3 up [from the street].

Just be glad we don't have to describe what a biscuit is in PR :/

In Italy we use the British/western Europe way:

Ground Floor = piano terra (zero or "T" or "G" in elevators) ;
1st Floor= primo piano
2nd Floor= secondo piano
3rd Floor= terzo piano
Last Floor= Ultimo piano = Roof -1

a building with a 3rd floor is... a building with 3 floors; we don't count the ground at all

due to the notable differences, I always had problems to operate in buildings in international PR squads, expecially as medic (double Ts in Muttrah are my nightmare )

This is how I fixed the problem in PR.

American English - My English
-----------------------------------
first floor - ground floor
second floor - floor above ground floor
third floor - some floor I don't know I'll call out on local
fourth floor - floor under roof
roof - roof

No more misunderstandings. As long as you don't use the third floor as much.

Edit: Is it just me or does the word floor look really weird? floor...floor... floor.

Yep, here in Baltics 1st floor is ground floor so I've had my share of comm problems aswell while playing PR. I usually try to adapt, but sometimes I forget.

In German we literaly say ground floor and then everything above x floor.

Cossack, I wasn't being serious. Language is formed by tradition and use. It is an evolving beast. Even though we're mostly talking about speaking English, as we see, there are a range of localised social norms. By playing games online we bring together normally isolated linguistic forms and traditions. Hence the confusion.

Everyone feels, to some extent, as though their's is the proper, if not necessarily logical way. That's why these differences exist and are maintained.

Don't worry, I'm not arguing for Anglo-exceptionalism.

(UK) Ground floor is the bottom floor, i.e. the floor where main access is gained. This is the 'first' floor of the building, but the first floor is the floor above the ground floor.

Here is a 4 storey building:

| - Ground Floor (Street level access)

PS. Keep reading the word 'Floor' and suddenly it looks weird and doesn't make sense. Floor.

technically speaking, with construction "levels" in mind, the US notation is correct

BUT

we (western Europeans) are all mentally conditioned from very early age to use the Brit one

it's the same with writings or comics: try to read original japanese manga (from right to left in the page and from bottom to top in the volume) and sure you'd have an headache
