It simply takes time to develop these things, so if you are a person that fits the above description, you will grow to LOVE this game.
I know the graphics/engine are essentially the same, but the PR experience shares almost no common ground with the original BF2 experience, we want to be sure you grasp that. I think the best plan of action for you is to link up with the Portuguese-speaking StevePl4y5 for some training.
Oh, and read the manual. The whole thing. That is step #1 on the road to having fun in PR.
I think its for the best if people whom realize what PR offers is not for them uninstall, rather than sticking around in an attempt to get the game they want out of PR to everyones frustration themselves included.
With that said the hatetred of snipers is a bit exaggerated. If you do want to snipe join a trans squad or something to not block a spot in an infantery squad or worse, block off a squad slot. Its just 2 kits.
Even though they are away from the bulk of the team, it does not mean snipers can not be teamplayers. By sneaking their way to get an angle on the enmy offset to the mainthrust a skilled sniper can pick off enemy after enemy whom is in cover from the direction of the main attack, but not the sniper. Skilled as in skilled in reading the flow of the battle and moving about to your position without getting shot. If you play smart you dont even need to be that good at shooting the sniper rifle.

Seriously pal, if you have no idea what the game is about or how the mechanics work, how are you ever gonna enjoy it?
It used to be (and occasionally still is) the job of familiar players to teach unfamiliar players, at least the good ones took it upon themselves to do more than scream RTFM.

I just played a game a few minutes ago and I had 5 new players in my squad. (Honestly, I was shocked). First thing I asked them: "Are you new?" 5 said yes. I then asked the 5; "Did you read the manual?". 2/5 said yes. The 2 that spent time reading the manual had a spectacular round. (Each combined had 3,590 points!!! That's awesome for a new player!!). One was a medic, he revived around 14 people. The other guy was a rifleman. They both combined had 12 kills, 3 deaths. (Yes, I know K/D doesn't matter in PR, just pointing it out). And the other 3 that didn't read the manual... they had combined 2,300 points. They were Rifleman, Medic #2, and a LAT kit... Combined had 11 kills 13 deaths.
I was disappointing indeed, but they are new. I told the 3 guys that did poorly to read the manual, they said they would.
But seriously man, if you read the manual... you will have more fun playing.
And, you could report squads that do lock infantry squads... since on most servers it against rules.

That's it. That's the kind of amazing teamwork moment you can't experience in any other game! It's going to get even better so keep at it.
Snipers and marksman can be very useful when they stick with your squad. One of the coolest moments I've had was when a sniper in my squad took out an enemy TOW a moment before friendly tanks moved in to take out the FOB it was defending. The coolest part was that he timed it perfectly by communicating with the squad leader.
Damn, now I want to play but I'm at work

Yeah, I saw you were playing on MeRk, couldn't join you unfortunately, had to leave earlier! Told you it was a good server

yeah, merk is a good server. NEW server has questionable admins but its still ok. HoG is another good server, but it has the problem of running the same few maps over and over again (bad votes by admins etc.).
if you want to avoid chaos and a bad experience just stay away from free candy van and that polish server.
CIA server is somewhere between free candy van and HoG, sometimes very good , sometimes horrible. but overall the server is solid.

HOG: Strict chat rules if admins happen to be online, say bad word and you are permabanned
PRTA: No map votes, strict rules, admins attitude / mood varies
NEW/merk: my experiences are pretty neutral
Candy van: sandbox server imo, not so "serious business" but good gameplay can be experienced
PRTA love-hate relationship but I usually play there.

Yes, it is. But there are so many servers with so few vets currently. If you join the wrong server there is noone to help you. Imagine that. Then, not having read the manual, being on a server where noone knows what the hell to do. It's gonna be plain shit. If half of the people on that server actually read the manual there would have been a lot less of a problem.
I am completely for teaching new guys, and all vets should do this. But that doesn't take away the fact that we should keep on telling new guys that reading the manual actually is very useful. Almost all of the new guys who are told that the manual is actually useful, will give it a read.

LMAO hahaha, actually i completely changed my mind about the sniper kit since i started this thread, i will take marksmen over it all day of the week, i found it quite effective and far more usefull than if i had a sniper kit. Video quite accurate actually, i saw 2 guys doing this yesterday on PRTA, both of them got the sniper kits and then created a 2 men squad called Sniper squad (how stupid). By the end of the game i couldn't even see them in the scoreboard without scrolling way down there

Some people here are kinda ghey and used to their iRL positions of authority on what ever hierarchy they are on and expect everyone else to follow all the arbitrary rules and such.
Don't really need to listen to people here concerning sniping kits and such.
The game was more liberally adjusted long ago and it worked fine.
Today you need at least three people in your SQD for snajping.
You can form your own SQD called "Demo/Sniping". I do that sometimes.
We have fun with snipers covering demo guys blowing up fobs, but most of the time we just run around pwniing n00bs that are content with farming points by building fobs that get blown up by us. And by run around and pwniing n00bs I mean the snipers get in position to position.
One thing the folks said here is true though. You can't run around with a sniper kit. Sniping is for chilling in one place. If you have two monitors you can mix it in with browsing the news or facebooking or what ever you like to do.
PR can be a lot more fun than BF2 precisely because of the teamplay, but that teamplay doesn't have to be some stupid authoritarian ******* telling everyone to sit in a building for 30 minutes until they are blown up by an other squad who spots them and throws grenades in there.
Enjoy some inspiration for what real fun teamplay can do:
In the past you could do even more lulzworthy stuff like overrun US main base with co-ordinated suicide bomber attacks blowing up all their assets. Then butthurt people whined about it.
OP, if you can't get a positive K/D as rifleman then you will just make your team have 1 person less if you take sniper.
When you can do well with rifleman and don't get yourself killed, suppress many enemies and kill some, try Designated Marksman and stick near the squad.
Once you can do very well with that, go sniper and form a scout squad, moving near squads and giving them supporting fire and info.

I already do it, i play with marksman a lot and i'm always successfull taking out infantry targets than my mates can't. Also, i tried sniper a couple of times and it isn't that hard really, i remember once in Kashan Desert i was sitting in a hill providing info about enemy tanks coordinates. A whole squad was moving in an large open place and i managed to take 5 of them out pretty easily, if someone tried to stay back and revive he would be dead too. It was pretty fun and i actually didn't have much of a problem shooting people at long range or shooting moving targets. Pretty fun to play sniper
