Heres one for you then - after reading other comments on this thread I thought hmm lets see then. So today splashed out 30 quid on a creative x-fi audio sound card.

Fits card and fires up PRMM - F*CKING HELL!!!! the audio is unbelievable. The things you can hear and the quality of sound are outstanding.

BUT and heres the thing - my frame rate has dropped. I have been playing around using on-board 97 and then this card tonight and for some reason the new card sucks the life force outta the cpu. I did see another model that was a lot more money called X-FI gaming. I'm thinking this one must have on board processor or such like so as not to rely on the main cpu??????

Any way - I'm back on good old AC 97 now but I shall have to get the gamer card I think because the sound difference was shockingly good.

Yes - I always download the newest drivers from the manufacturers site as the ones on the included cd are normally well outta date.

Since I posted earlier I have found a few reviews that seem to suggest that all the X-fi cards are not the same. Some are not good for gaming - it does make a song and dance about being great for mp3 etc on the box

Look how much help that guy got.
I make one little comment, just one ... LOL. I think I might actually go and buy myself a soundcard. Thanks for the tip.

'[R-PUB wrote:Garabaldi']That's odd :? ??:.

The X-Fi should be taking a load off of the CPU.

Santa brought me a nice new X-Fi Xtreme Music, and the sound quality compared to my old onboard is night and day. I'm able to play with the X-Fi specific Ultra High setting. BF2 actually has some great audio.

Question - I'm assuming you installed the drivers along with the card, right?
I also got the X-Fi Xtreame Music for £92 bundeld with Creative Gaming (£30)headset ( now that was a great deal), Being able to set sound on Ultra high Is so great, and sounds are amazing, for instance u can hear the helos Take off from there base or a Tank rolling down the road miles away, Works even better when ur inside Buildings, For instance

if u are in the docks in Muttrah City up on the walk way, u can actully hear Someone just moving the tiny bit, as i found out after my squad leader was shot, from below,i turned and could see no one, Next thing i know i heard a little shuffle from my rear right speaker and turned and there he was Stuck inbetween the boxes by the flag,

Point is, it cunfused my brain in to more or less directing me to the postion in away

X-fi Xtream Music is a must.....saying that lots of stories about them no longer being made and thus the Gamer is the new well music, if u can get your hands on a Xtreame Music version thow that would be better.

The Xtreame Music comes with 3 modes Entertainment, Creation (not used this yet)and Game mode Yes mp3s do sound great more so in Entertainment that game mode but i belive you have to play the throw the Creative MEdia player called "GO" u can all so play AVI ect throw that mode but have found the sync is off by a fraction.

Before going in to game you must set it to game mode or else it FUbars up ur game as in u shall have no sound options are CMSS-3d : stick this on Auto , 24 bit crystalyzer : 100% theres all so EQ and mixer, ppls Pref differs this all so all comes with a THX set up, greta for teaking anysets of speakers i have 5.1

Anyway, hope this has helped some ppl

cheers

Okay, got my new card installed and there is a benefit from using one.

I am still having problems with 3 of the maps with graphics settings that suit the rest of the maps on highest possible. But now I am not siezing and spinning round 180 degrees anymore or hearing looping sound (except when trying to exit the game on those maps!)

For the measily sum of £12 I've pretty much reclaimed some cpu usage to help with my gaming, plus music quality has improved a bit on my system when I simply play music (I used to port 2ch out to my stacker system and use the controls on that, but the controls inside the new cards software are pretty good) still using 2ch sound mind! I see "high" and "eax" enabled in PR now. obviously no "ultra high" or "x-fi" but the main aim of this poor student buying this particular card was to help with gaming performance, not remind myself how much damage firing Milan without ear defence has done to my hearing :)

UPDATE - I have just swapped the X-FI extreme audio card for a X-Fi extreme gamer card (oh and parted with extra 25 quid)

:-D All is very rosy here now.

Sound is set to X-FI ultra-hi in game and boy does it show. Also the FRAPS has gone up now by a good 10 I would say!

All in all a very worthwhile purchase. Go buy a Creative X_FI extreme gamer card today :-D You won't believe the difference

STAY AWAY FROM THE X_FI AUDIO

Thanks to the guys who suggested sorting a sound card!
