I think that there are more reasons than lack of cash to just talk rather than listen. Children might feel they would be taken less seriously if they talk, women might feel they would get hit on in a male-dominated game. You might find it amazing, but some people just lack the general confidence to talk to complete strangers! I think everyone should be expected to listen even if they don't speak, or teamwork goes completely by the wayside.

On the other side, I can't see any real reasons to turn off your VOIP so you can't hear your squad, and particularly your squad-leader though (reasons that wouldn't require you to turn off your speakers, anyway). Well, I suppose people might have had problems with idiots hurling abuse at them (I haven't had or heard of this problem so far), but the cure for that is easy enough: kick from squad or change squad.

:-P I usually use in game VOIP with the ppl in my squad and also use ventrilo to talk to the other SL's (or type if they are not on the DVB vent) it works really, really, well....IMO leads to the most dynamic communications possible and a kick *** team.

You can always find me in VOIP squads.
Sometimes right next to you, barking away.

Anyway, my point: I sometimes really wish that Squad leaders could talk amongst themselves - especially usefull when the only squad within range of a critical flag is moving away from it (and there's no commander present) towards a some non-critical flag, and someone needs to light a fire under them.

Ideally:
Channel 1: Only between - Squad leader to Commander

Channel 2: Only between - All Squad leaders (additionally, Commander may only listen in to this channel)

Channel 3: Only between - Squad members

But of course - the more complex the comms get, the more training would be required in order to prevent chaos and un-professional usage of it.

Interesting perspective, but i think thats wrong, mostly. Its probably due to a lack of self confidence though, or the feeling that they dont know what to say In-game.

My advice, take the plunge. Ask questions, just like y-know the RL world :) people like being asked questions.

i.e. SL: Ok squad, suggestions how we are going to deal with that tank way out there in the desert?

or..

"This is <insert nickname here> I'm going to select medic class, is that alright with you squadleader? Where would you like us to spawn."

Keep it simple to start, and if you aren't the talkative type point out something really important, like the mines that your vodnik is about to run into.

(more to come, and if anyone wants more, there is my old link which i will making into a guide soon).

HAHHAHA! That is hilarious, I'll keep that in mind next time I play with you.

I use VOIP 90% of the time. I might not if people are watching tv or a movie (my computers in the living room) but im usually playing PR when everyone hits the sack or no ones at the apt.

A voip program outside the game is cheating. It lets you break communication rules, like no talking when your dead (talking while dead is ghosting and is shunned), talking to the other team (just plain cheap), and talking with the commander if you aren't SL.

Hey! I have a southern accent, use voip time to time, only usually when the whole squad communicates, I join in, when the squad just types chat, or loud yelling in german, i dont speak.

You might've been on my squad for a while last night on EJOD

i find the game completely boring without VOIP. VOIP is what makes the game as satisfying as it is for me.

90% of the time pretty much unless i am so tired and for some reason still playing PR at 4 in the morning I can barley talk..turn it off and go to bed you say? Never lol!

Some of the IGI guys are a bit quiet when squad leading I found when playing on their server!
Nothing bad against any member of IGI great and fair server but a squad leader whould be barking orders!

I use it a lot, but sometimes it just gets irritating, like when you have 5 other people in your squad all with mics, but one is a pre-pubescent kid with 1000 speech impediments, the second speaks with some bizarre European accent you've never heard and can hardly understand English, the third is busy screaming profanities (which, for some reasons he needs to scream into his microphone for us all to hear), the fourth has his mic so quiet you're not sure if he's even speaking, and the fifth is so non-chalante it kills the feel of the battle.

But most of time its a great help.

I use VOIP all the time, even when no one else is. It just makes the game more fun to play, instead of getting pissed you can just say "I got killed by a busta fool right there, bust a cap in dat jive *** n***a."

One thing that does get anoying is when people vent their frustration over VOIP, especialy if they suck... because then it happens a lot. It's a lot more helpfull to just say where/how you died, even if you're not gangsta about it.

My VIOP turns to pure static when I'm on TS, so I rarely use it.

I use VOIP all the time now. I've been using it for a few weeks, and it's great. Everyone should be using it because it makes your squad more effective, since you can relay information alot faster, and it's alot more social and fun talking to people.
