It is not possible with the BF2 engine.

The more you shoot, no, you do not close your other eye.
It hinder's your field of view and it is absolutely unneccesary to close your left eye when shooting.
I use a 6.5-20x Leupold for varmint shooting and regularly switch between the images I'm "seeing" from my left eye and that which I'm seeing with my left eye. Look on the net for a concept known as the "bindon aiming concept", something usually reserved for lower power optics like Aimpoint Comp M red dots and the Trijicon Acog.
But I can tell you first hand that it works for magnified optics to some degree as well allowing you to merge what the left eye is seeing and bring the reticle on target quicker with what the right eye is seeing. I'm not talking about "cameleon" eyes here. Just that your brain naturally wants to merge the images and it will try to do this fairly quickly. If I shoot both eyes open I bring the cross hairs on target MUCH more quickly, even with a high magnification scope, than if I had the left eye close and have to literally "scan" for a target.
I've also been able to hit running jack rabbits at 200-300 yards thanks to keeping both eyes open and being able to have that wider field of view, the left eye can see the terrain that the rabbit is heading for that the right eye cannot see due to a limited field of view.
I gaurantee you that most every marksman out there worth his salt shoots with both eyes open for everything from handguns to rifles regardless of if it's open sights or a scope.

What ugly is said is how you use red dot sights, but with magnification instead
Good idea, but I dont think the engine can support it thou

It can apply equally to both. Having shot in competition using AR15s with both iron sights, red dots, and even the scope from my varmint rifle. It's both eyes open across the course.
Same goes for when I'm prone with my 300WinMag or 50BMG shooting to 800+ yards, both eyes open. In fact there's a certain amount of strain that comes from having to mentally close your left eye and conciously ignore it's input. Spend a couple hours on the range forcefully keeping that eye shut looking behind a scope and it will become apparent.

I was trying to show how the distorted effect would look like. I know it isn't zoomed in.
you dont get it
whatever the magnification of the center would be the magnification of the periphial, which makes it just look like a red dot scope

Since it cant be done in the BF2 engine, this would be the next best thing.

I agree with desert fox on this. This is the next best thing regarding limitations of the engine.
As to the scope, it's called eye relief, it's a measurement in inches that shows how far the eye needs to be from the scope to see a picture. The eye relief is extended for magnum rifles and rifles with high recoil. Red dot sights on the other hand have infinite eye relief due to no magnification. Certain low power pistol scopes also have high eye relief.

indeed. Blur out the surrounding of the scope is the best option.

Bah...

I would like to see that scope in game... But BF2 engine is limited all the way. Well... At least make the reticle in the scopes a little less thick. And another thing... Make visible the bolt action animation when reload the munition. This balance the game when it comes to sniper view and personally i like to view the anim. of the bolt!
Best regards.
Focha
EDIT: And if you made some sort of scope view with 2 parts, one with the scope like the view from the aimpoint but magnified and on the same view another part that include the blur effect and the black side scope effect when moving...?! Ok im telling this, but it is possible that BF2 engine limit this idea... I dont know how BF2 engine works. But you would have 2 objects and a magnified view, you would have to make the code so that the view is magnified but the scope is a regular iron sight but drawned differently. Is just an idea. Bye
PS: Sorry my bad english!

Just want to clarify, I refered to scopes, not red dot sights or something like that. I am able to fire and hit (

) with both my eyes open and yes I know about dominant eyes (mine is the right one). But a sniper probably (Im not a sniper so ? ) wouldn't fire with both his eyes open. But even when firing with both eyes open you would only focus on what you are aiming at/your sights.
@solodude: Since we don't have the chocie of free-look when we have the scopes up blurring everything else except the inside of the scope is the most realistic choice. The other way around would make it very inconvienent and make the scope useless.
Sidenote: The eye can only focus at 4% of the complete image it sees.

If you had your optics up, and you glanced to the side of them, would your vision still be blurry? NO. In real life you have the option to look around your optics and focus on distances and such. Just because you have your gun up dosn't mean you HAVE to be looking down the sight.
You have peripheral vision, with both eyes open you can sort of see out side the scope when your looking thru it, but unscoping is equal to looking around with gun up. in fact the gun is still aimed at the same place from scope to no scope, even with different weapon.
It does NOT make sense to blur that outside of the scope! That is ridiculous. The only reason your vision in real life would blur on the outsides is because you are not currently focused/LOOKING there.
thats the point of this thread!
If you are looking down the scope on the game, your eyes will automatically blur everything out around it until you look at it.
In game, you if there inst black, you can quickly glance to the side cause the screen is smaller and controlled by mouse.
but saying the burr effect is realistic is wrong.
The only reason your vision in real life would blur on the outsides is because you are not currently focused/LOOKING there.
your contradicting yourself

I made this a long time ago, cant remember what it was for but its probably not what it would look like in real life... as I made it freehand and didnt have any pictures to look off. I dont remember how to get them in BF2, so I just copy pasted on a random background. 0_0
Theres a black one, and a wierd silver one.

My point is not directly about the blurr, its that fact that where you aren't looking, your vision is blurry in real life. However if you look there, it is no longer blurry. I never contradicted myself, you have misinterpreted (or totally missed my point).
In BF2, you aim at what you see. IRL your peripheral is larger but less focused than scoped in BF2.
I am not talking about moving the mouse, moving your head, etc. I am simply talking about moving your eyes to look to other areas other than the scope. Believe it or not this is possible 'IRL'.
If I interpret your post the way you say, than you could in effect, scope from the hip. looking out of the scope, you cant focus in the scope (because your not looking thur scope) thus the no scope mode.
Marksman would be different, but FYI, Im talking about sniper-when-sniping scopes

Sorry for the bad position and quality, I used my cell phone to take the picture cause I forgot to charge up my digital camera

.
Anyways, hers how it looks like when zoomed in with a rifle:

On the topics of scopes, why are the lines so thick in game? If anyone is interested, I was thinking of reskinning them so they are only 1px wide, becuase right now they seem very thick to me.

You're gripping too hard on your right hand and too loose on your left, that's where you get those flyers from on the upper right.
In Reply to the Topic;
No you do not keep both eyes open when you're on the rifle, that's what your spotter is for. Your only focus is on the shot with your dominenant eye on the scope.
